July 29: National Chicken Wing Day: -- An annual day to indulge in a frenzy of dipping and sauce tasting. With so many choices, be sure to pace yourself! The day celebrates the little appetizer that could. Also known as buffalo wings, hot wings or just wings, each of us eats about 290 per year. While a chicken has two wings per bird, it produces four of these tasty morsels. That's because when we dissect the wing, we break it down into the wingette, drumette, and tip. The wingette and drumette get seasoned and fried into the deliciousness we devour at tailgate parties and trivia nights. While many people do call them hot wings, one of the most popular sauces is ranch dressing. Another go-to dip is bleu cheese. Although, plenty of spicy sauces fill the menus. Since chicken wings are usually deep-fried, celery, carrots or other crunchy veggies accompany the dish to counterbalance the spice and fat. To observe National Chicken Wing day: Head out to your restaurant of choice and order some chicken wings. Or make them at home and explore different auces to make your dipping outstanding! And post on social media using #NationalChickenWingDay and encourage others to join in! After a number of years of different establishments selling their version of Buffalo Wings, the city of Buffalo, NY in 1977 proclaimed July 29th to be National Chicken Wing Day. Establishments like the Anchor Bar, Wings n' Things, and Duff's all became famous for their wings. During Jean Shepherd's early 1960s radio shows, he regularly and eagerly recommended the chicken wings he frequently ate, cooked by one of his show's sponsors, a Chinese restaurant in New York City's Chinatown - has shades of A Christmas Story, doesn't it?!? :D On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/complete-jean-shepherd-radio-and-lp-collection-mp3-dvds-2-dis32.html

July 29: National Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day: -- The point of this holiday is to buy cheese specifically to 'sacrifice' it by cutting a piece and putting it on a mousetrap. That way, you can rid your house of mice every year- at least, that seems to be the original idea behind it. Nowadays, people see it as something very antiquated, since we have many new methods of pest control. Studies show that mice don't even like cheese! For those reasons, many have been trying to reinvent the holiday and what it means to 'sacrifice' cheese. Cheese has been present for millennia, well before written history. The oldest direct evidence of cheesemaking was discovered in a 7,000-year-old piece of pottery in Poland. While the first documented evidence of cheese dates from the early second millennium B.C., it comes from Sumerian cuneiform texts of the Third Dynasty of Ur. The pressing and salting of curdled milk could have been the start of cheesemaking. The first cheeses were sour and salty, with a texture similar to rustic cottage cheese or modern feta. At the start of the ancient Roman era, cheese became a sophisticated delicacy, and many foreign kinds of cheese were imported to Rome to satisfy the tastes of the social elite. Pliny's "Natural History," from the year 77 A.D., devotes two whole chapters to the many types of cheese the Romans enjoyed. And Columella's "De Re Rustica", circa 65 A.D., details a cheesemaking process involving rennet coagulation, pressing of the curd, salting, and aging. Most cheeses were initially recorded in the late Middle Ages, though they may predate this era. Cheddar dates from the 1100s, Parmesan was recorded in 1597, Gouda in 1697, and Camembert in 1791. In the Americas, conquistadors said the Inca and other Andean cultures consumed llama cheese. Since the European colonization, local cheeses have been developed across both North and South America. The first factory for the industrial production of cheese opened in Switzerland in 1815. However, large-scale production found real success in the United States. Jesse Williams, a dairy farmer from Rome, New York began making cheese in an assembly-line fashion in 1851. Mass-produced rennet began in the 1860s, and the mass production of cheese made it readily available to the poorer classes. Factory-made cheese overtook traditional cheese-making during the World War II era, and since then, factories have been the source of most cheese in Europe and especially in America. July 29: International Tiger Day: -- The tiger enjoys the reputation of being the largest of the world's big cats. A tiger can be easily identified with its distinctive orange and black stripes on its face and body. International Tiger Day is celebrated across the globe so that all of us can raise awareness for tiger conservation. The day aims to build a worldwide system that will be dedicated to protecting tigers and their natural habitats. A safe and thriving habitat for tigers means that we conserve other species and our forests, too. Through International Tiger Day we can work for a future where humans and tigers can cohabit peacefully. International Tiger Day was first celebrated in 2010 after it was found that 97% of all wild tigers had disappeared in the last century, with about only 3,000 of them remaining. It's not news that tigers are on the brink of extinction and International World Tiger Day aims to halt the numbers from worsening. Habitat loss, climate change, hunting, and poaching are only some of the factors that are responsible for the decline in the tiger population. Along with the preservation of these species, the day also aims to protect and expand their habitats. Many international organizations such as the WWF, the IFAW, and the Smithsonian Institute also observe International Tiger Day. With the loss of habitat and climate change, tigers are increasingly coming into conflict with humans. Poaching and the illegal trade industry is also a very serious threat that wild tigers face. Demand for tiger bone, skin, and other body parts is leading to increased cases of poaching and trafficking. This is resulting in localized extinctions, which has made the revival of the tiger population next to impossible. Another threat that has negatively impacted the tiger population is the loss of habitat. All across the world, we are witnessing a loss of tiger habitats due to access routes, human settlements, timber logging, plantations, and agriculture. In fact, only about 7% of the original tiger habitats are still intact today. Experts also worry that the lack of genetic diversity among tigers can lead to inbreeding in small populations. The ever-increasing habitat loss means that the conflicts between tigers and humans are on the rise. Tigers may wander into the human population which is worrying for people as well as these majestic cats. July 29: Rain Day: -- There probably would have been no life without rain! Various people and cultures have celebrated rain and its life-giving power through prayers, arts and music, folklore, and more. Rain doesn't just water our trees and makes the earth fresh and green, the first spells of the shower after a long stretch of summer brings us so much joy! If you are lucky enough to get some rain on Rain Day, head outside to dance, walk, or sing in the rain. Today is the perfect day to feel grateful for the lovely planet that we live in and its many miracles. Rain Day is celebrated in some way or other in most cultures in the world, and this is a day that has been celebrated for a long time now. Records show that the first Rain Day was celebrated as early as in the 1800s. William Allison, a pharmacist, is the one who should be thanked for creating the much-loved Rain Day. Legend has it that Allison had a drugstore located on High Street, in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, and to him, it seemed that every year on July 29 it would rain without fail. The pharmacist grabbed the opportunity and declared July 29 to be celebrated as Rain Day every year! Since then, Allison would also keep a yearly record of the rainfall on this specific date, and later his brother, Albert Allison started doing the same in the 1920s. The antics of these two brothers reached the offices of The Byron Daily and they started recording this mystical event which kept happening every year. The event probably would have remained small and local if it was not for a newsman from the area. In the 1930s, John O'Hara decided that he would send stories about Rain Day to other newspapers. As more and more people found out about Rain Day, the celebrations became widespread too. And today, newspapers and other media outlets often call up those in Waynesburg to find out if it is raining on this date. Of course, other people have started celebrating this date in their own ways. A very common way of celebrating Rain Day is by simply learning about rainfall and the importance of it, and spreading awareness about rainwater conservation. July 29: National Challenged Champions And Heroes Awareness Day: -- A day to honor and recognize the differently-abled and their caregivers. It is a day to put into practice the idea of treating others the way you want to be treated. The idea of this day is to highlight these Champions' abilities and not their disabilities. Focus on what is positive is the best we can do for these people. Challenged Champions and Heroes is an organization that focuses on physically and mentally disabled people of the world and aims to recognize and honor them. This organization also addresses their caregivers. They called them the "Heroes" because they are the ones who spend countless hours caring for and loving others despite what may be going on in their own lives. Challenged Champions and Heroes was founded in 2015. The president and founder of the organization are Robin A. Lococo. The organization highlights the idea that every life is valuable and created for a purpose. Every person has a destiny and purpose to fulfill. They also believe in bringing honor and recognition to these extraordinary people since it will also awaken the gifts and greatness within them. They want to change the idea that many people do not recognize their value in life. A goal of Challenged Champions and Heroes is the initiative to redefine the word 'disabled' by calling it Challenged Champions. They state that the focus should be on these Champions' abilities and not their disabilities. The Caregivers of our Challenged Champions are also heroes. These Heroes have dedicated their lives to caring for and loving humanity challenged by the hard life circumstances they face day by day. One of the organization's future goals is to honor other organizations that seek to help Challenged Champions and bring education and awareness programs covering human rights and disability freedoms. July 29: National Lipstick Day: -- A day that encourages you to wear your best color! National Lipstick Day! Lipstick has likely been around for thousands of years, made out of an insane array of items, from gemstones to crushed bugs. It has also come to symbolize so many things for women particularly through the eras, and still is an important part for many makeup routines today. It's no wonder that it's so common to hear the phrase "I feel like I'm naked without my lipstick!" Every girl's go-to makeup item and the power of a set of stained lips is celebrated on National Lipstick Day on July 29. National Lipstick Day is a super fun celebration of all that lipstick has done for us - life is just so much more fun with it! It also has a far more interesting history than you might think. The first people to wear lipstick were likely Ancient Sumerians. Crushed gemstones decorated not only their lips, but eyes and face as well. Lipsticks in some form also caught on in ancient China with beeswax, and in Ancient Greece, where courtesans wore berry-derived dyes on their lips. The popularity only grew in 16th-century England, where a bright white face and hyper-crimson lips were worn widely to steal Queen Elizabeth's look. It was used only for courtesans and actors and considered uncouth to be worn by the general public. By the 19th century, the first commercial lipstick made of deer tallow, castor oil, and beeswax had been made in France - and lipstick absolutely took off. The US quickly caught on, applying lipstick with a brush rather than a tube. In WW2, lipstick was scarce, and started to be packaged in plastic and paper tubes. The first long-lasting, no-smear lipstick was also invented during this time! The number of shades of lipstick have exploded since the early 20th century, when colors were limited. Each decade brought its own new style and popularized new shades. In the 1970s, fun colors like sparkling navy blue and frosted lime green were even introduced! Today, makeup videos and "get ready with me's" dominate social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube. Some makeup artists rise to huge fame and make their living off of recommending different lipsticks and trying them on for their viewers. The lipstick industry has grown into a huge player in makeup and offers a chance for users to express themselves through makeup! (EarthStation1.com is grateful to have had Mr. Theodorakis's support in his final years :) ) ========= July 29, 1925: #BOTD: #HBD! Mikis Theodorakis, Greek composer and lyricist credited with over 1,000 works, activist, politician, Nobel Peace Prize nominee (d. September 2, 2021) is #born Michail Theodorakis on the Greek island of Chios. He scored for the films Zorba the Greek (1964), Z (1969), and Serpico (1973). He composed the "Mauthausen Trilogy", also known as "The Ballad Of Mauthausen", which has been described as the "most beautiful musical work ever written about the Holocaust" and possibly his best work. Up until his death in 2021, he was viewed as Greece's best-known living composer. He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize. Politically, he was associated with the left because of his long-standing ties to the Communist Party Of Greece (KKE). He was an MP for the KKE from 1981 to 1990. Despite this however, he ran as an independent candidate within the centre-right New Democracy party in 1989, in order for the country to emerge from the political crisis that had been created due to the numerous scandals of the government of Andreas Papandreou. He helped establish a large coalition between conservatives, socialists and leftists. In 1990 he was elected to the parliament (as in 1964 and 1981), became a government minister under Konstantinos Mitsotakis, and fought against drugs and terrorism and for culture, education and better relations between Greece and Turkey. He continued to speak out in favour of leftist causes, Greek-Turkish-Cypriot relations, and against the War in Iraq. He was a key voice against the 1967-1974 Greek junta, which imprisoned him and banned his songs. Mikis Theodorakis died from cardiopulmonary arrest at his home in Athens, at the age of 96. The Greek Prime Minister declared three days of national mourning to honour him, and his body was lain in state in the chapel of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, with many thousands of people, artists and political leaders from all Greek parties paying their final respects. Epitaphs were delivered by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Aikaterini Sakellaropoulou, and the leader of the Greek Communist Party, Dimitrios Koutsoumbas. Afterwards, according to his will, his body was transferred by boat overnight to be buried at his town of origin, Galatas, near Chania, Crete, where his parents' and brother's graves also are. ( #JCKaelin here: As a specialist in the area of Axis radio propaganda, I can tell you authoritatively that the both Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan were *obsessed* with discrediting Charlie Christian, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa as "J_wbators" -- precisely because they were, as an ensemble, the best damn swing band on the planet. Both nations constantly played their songs, but only either before or after bad war news for the Allies, or parodies of their songs. Why? Because they were *great*, and it really, really made those bastards angry that they were great. Now Nazi Germany & Imperial Japan are no more - but #SwingMusicRocks forever! ) ========= July 29, 1916: #BOTD: #HBD! Charlie Christian, African American swing and jazz guitarist (d. March 2, 1942) is #born Charles Henry Christian in Bonham, Texas. Christian was an important early performer on the electric guitar and a key figure in the development of bebop and cool jazz. He gained national exposure as a member of the Benny Goodman Sextet and Orchestra from August 1939 to June 1941. His single-string technique, combined with amplification, helped bring the guitar out of the rhythm section and into the forefront as a solo instrument. For this, he is often credited with leading to the development of the lead guitar role in musical ensembles and bands. John Hammond and George T. Simon called Christian the best improvisational talent of the swing era. In the liner notes to the album Solo Flight: The Genius of Charlie Christian (Columbia, 1972), Gene Lees wrote that "Many critics and musicians consider that Christian was one of the founding fathers of bebop, or if not that, at least a precursor to it." Christian's influence reached beyond jazz and swing. In 1990, he was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in the category Early Influence. Charlie Christian died of tuberculosis at Seaview Sanitarium on Staten Island, New York, aged 25. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Bonham, Texas; a Texas State Historical Commission Marker and headstone were placed in Gates Hill Cemetery in 1994, but the location of the historical marker and headstone was disputed, and in March 2013, Fannin County, Texas recognized that the marker was in the wrong spot, and that Christian is in fact buried under a concrete slab at Gates Hill Cemetery, Bonham, Texas, based on eyewitness accounts from the funeral taken by Christian biographer Craig McKinney. The gravesite is nontheless poorly constructed, poorly maintained and shabby, and this distinguished jazz and swing pioneer prodigy deserves so much better! His opinions drew no controversy when published in the Evening Standard in London, but ignited angry reactions from Christian communities in the United States when republished. The controversy deeply impacted the band, contributing significantly to their decision to cease touring entirely. It also resulted in Lennon apologised at a series of press conferences, clarifying that he was not comparing himself to Christ. Lennon's comments incited protests and threats, particularly throughout the Bible Belt in the Southern United States. Some radio stations stopped playing Beatles songs, records were publicly burned, press conferences were cancelled, and the Ku Klux Klan picketed concerts. The controversy coincided with the band's 1966 US tour and overshadowed press coverage of their newest album, Revolver, when it was released one week later on August 5, 1966, and just over three weeks later on August 23, 1966, The Beatles second Shea Stadium concert, held a little over a year after their first triumphant appearance there, did not sell out, with 11,000 of the 55,600 tickets still available; nonetheless, The Beatles made more money from their appearance than they had in 1965, receiving 189K USD - 65 per cent of the gross takings of 292K USD. George Martin remarked "Curiously enough the second Shea Stadium concert had about 11,000 seats unsold. So it was a pretty unsettling time. And it was against this background that they said, 'Right, we definitely won't do any more. We are going to have a break and then we are going into the studio to make a record.'"; that record was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, widely considered one of if not the greatest rock album of all time and by musicologists as an early concept album that advanced the roles of sound composition, extended form, psychedelic imagery, record sleeves, and popular music production. The album had an immediate cross-generational impact and was associated with numerous touchstones of the era's youth culture, such as fashion, drugs, mysticism, and a sense of optimism and empowerment. In 1980, Lennon was murdered by a religious Beatles fan, Mark David Chapman, who sometimes stated that Lennon's comment was a motivating factor in the killing. ========= In the same July 29, 1966 Datebook issue that published John Lennon's "More Popular Than Jesus" interview, it also published the Paul McCartney "It's [ie America] A Lousy Country Where Anyone Black Is A Dirty Nigger!" interview, both of which sparked a hostile backlash against the Beatles throughout America, particularly the American South's bible belt. McCartney's quote is in fact a paraphrase -- not a direct McCartney statement -- of the Beatles' criticism of American racism - it was in fact the magazine chose the inflammatory wording, not McCartney. The magazine's wording was editor Art Unger's editorial choice, pulled from longer interviews and rewritten in sensational language to sell magazines. The Beatles had indeed said America was "a lousy country" for calling Black people the n-word -- meaning they were condemning racist behavior, not endorsing it -- but the magazine exaggerated and reframed this into the shocking headline you saw. In later interviews, McCartney clarified that they were criticizing racism, not America as a whole. They were frustrated that speaking in favor of civil rights made some people call them "extremists." He stood by the belief that Black people are equal to white people, and that honesty was better than giving a "showbiz answer." He did not use the slur himself -- he was condemning the fact that Americans used it. In fact, The Beatles were outspoken against segregation. In 1964, they refused to play a segregated concert in Jacksonville, Florida. McCartney said in 1966: "We weren't into prejudice_ Why should you separate Black people from white? That's stupid." They also demanded integrated audiences in their contracts. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/the-compleat-beatles-documentary-dvd.html

Jerusalem fell after a 30-month siege, following which the Babylonians systematically destroyed the city and the First Temple. The Kingdom of Judah was dissolved and many of its inhabitants were exiled to Babylon. During the late 7th century BC, Judah became a vassal kingdom of Babylon. In 601 BC, Jehoiakim, king of Judah, revolted against Babylonian rule despite the strong remonstrances of the prophet Jeremiah. Jehoiakim died for reasons unclear, and was succeeded by his son, Jeconiah. In 597 BC, the Babylonians besieged Jerusalem, and the city surrendered. Nebuchadnezzar pillaged Jerusalem and deported Jeconiah and other prominent citizens to Babylon; Jeconiah's uncle, Zedekiah, was installed as king. Later, encouraged by the Egyptians, Zedekiah launched a second revolt, and a Babylonian army was sent to retake Jerusalem. On Tisha B'Av, July 587 or 586 BC, the Babylonians took Jerusalem, destroyed the First Temple and burned down the city. The small settlements surrounding the city, and those close to the western border of the kingdom, were destroyed as well. According to the Bible, Zedekiah attempted to escape, but was captured near Jericho. He was forced to watch the execution of his sons in Riblah, and his eyes were then put out. The destruction of Jerusalem and its temple led to a religious, spiritual and political crisis, which left its mark in prophetic literature and biblical tradition. The Kingdom of Judah was abolished and annexed as a Babylonian province with its center in Mizpah. The Judean elite, including the Davidic dynasty, were exiled to Babylon. After Babylon had fallen to Cyrus the Great, founder of the Persian Achaemenid Empire, in 539 BC, he allowed the exiled Judeans to return to Zion and rebuild Jerusalem. July 29, 1588: The European Wars Of Religion: The Eighty Years' War (The Dutch Revolt): The Anglo-Spanish Wars: The Anglo-Spanish War (1585-1604): The Spanish Armada (The Invincible Armada, The Enterprise Of England [Spanish: Grande Y Felicisima Armada, "Great And Most Fortunate Navy"]): The Battle Of Gravelines (1588): -- English naval forces under the command of Lord Charles Howard and Sir Francis Drake defeat the Spanish Armada off the coast of Gravelines, France. The small port of Gravelines was then part of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, close to the border with France and the closest Spanish territory to England. Medina Sidonia tried to re-form his fleet there and was reluctant to sail further east knowing the danger from the shoals off Flanders, from which his Dutch enemies had removed the sea marks. The English had learned more of the Armada's strengths and weaknesses during the skirmishes in the English Channel and had concluded it was necessary to close within 100 yards (91 m) to penetrate the oak hulls of the Spanish ships. They had spent most of their gunpowder in the first engagements and had, after the Isle of Wight, been forced to conserve their heavy shot and powder for a final attack near Gravelines. During all the engagements, the Spanish heavy guns could not easily be run in for reloading because of their close spacing and the quantities of supplies stowed between decks, as Francis Drake had discovered on capturing the damaged Rosario in the Channel. Instead the gunners fired once and then jumped to the rigging to attend to their main task as marines ready to board enemy ships, as had been the practice in naval warfare at the time. In fact, evidence from Armada wrecks in Ireland shows that much of the fleet's ammunition was never spent. Their determination to fight by boarding, rather than cannon fire at a distance, proved a weakness for the Spanish; it had been effective on occasions such as the battles of Lepanto and Ponta Delgada (1582), but the English were aware of this strength and sought to avoid it by keeping their distance. With its superior manoeuvrability, the English fleet provoked Spanish fire while staying out of range. The English then closed, firing repeated and damaging broadsides into the enemy ships. This also enabled them to maintain a position to windward so that the heeling Armada hulls were exposed to damage below the water line. Many of the Spanish gunners were killed or wounded by the English broadsides, and the task of manning the cannon often fell to the regular foot soldiers on board, who did not know how to operate the guns. The ships were close enough for sailors on the upper decks of the English and Spanish ships to exchange musket fire. After eight hours, the English ships began to run out of ammunition, and some gunners began loading objects such as chains into cannons. Around 4:00 pm, the English fired their last shots and were forced to pull back. Five Spanish ships were lost. The galleass San Lorenzo, flagship of Don Hugo de Moncada, ran aground at Calais and was taken by Howard after murderous fighting between the crew, the galley slaves, the English who eventually killed all Spanish and slaves, and the French, who ultimately took possession of the wreck. The galleons San Mateo and San Felipe drifted away in a sinking condition, ran aground on the island of Walcheren the next day, and were taken by the Dutch. One carrack ran aground near Blankenberge; another foundered. Many other Spanish ships were severely damaged, especially the Portuguese and some Spanish Atlantic-class galleons (including some Neapolitan galleys) which had to bear the brunt of the fighting during the early hours of the battle in desperate individual actions against groups of English ships. The Spanish plan to join with Parma's army had been defeated and the English had gained some breathing space, but the Armada's presence in northern waters still posed a great threat to England. July 29, 1958: The History Of Rocketry: The History Of Spaceflight: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Space Age: Space Agencies Of The United States: The National Aeronautics And Space Administration (NASA): The National Aeronautics And Space Act (The National Aeronautics and Space Act) Of 1958): --#BOTD: #HBD! U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs into law the National Aeronautics And Space Act, which creates the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The Act, which followed close on the heels of the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik, was drafted by the United States House Select Committee on Astronautics and Space Exploration and on July 29, 1958 was signed by President Eisenhower. Prior to enactment, the responsibility for space exploration was deemed primarily a military venture, in line with the Soviet model that had launched the first orbital satellite. In large measure, the Act was prompted by the lack of response by a US military infrastructure that seemed incapable of keeping up the space race. The original 1958 act charged the new Agency with conducting the aeronautical and space activities of the United States "so as to contribute materially to one or more of the following objectives: "1) The expansion of human knowledge of phenomena in the atmosphere and space; 2) The improvement of the usefulness, performance, speed, safety, and efficiency of aeronautical and space vehicles; 3) The development and operation of vehicles capable of carrying instruments, equipment, supplies and living organisms through space; #4 The establishment of long-range studies of the potential benefits to be gained from, the opportunities for, and the problems involved in the utilization of aeronautical and space activities for peaceful and scientific purposes; 5) The preservation of the role of the United States as a leader in aeronautical and space science and technology and in the application thereof to the conduct of peaceful activities within and outside the atmosphere. The making available to agencies directly concerned with national defenses of discoveries that have military value or significance, and the furnishing by such agencies, to the civilian agency established to direct and control nonmilitary aeronautical and space activities, of information as to discoveries which have value or significance to that agency; 6) Cooperation by the United States with other nations and groups of nations in work done pursuant to this Act and in the peaceful application of the results, thereof; and 7) The most effective utilization of the scientific and engineering resources of the United States, with close cooperation among all interested agencies of the United States in order to avoid unnecessary duplication of effort, facilities, and equipment." In 2012, a ninth objective was added: "The preservation of the United States preeminent position in aeronautics and space through research and technology development related to associated manufacturing processes." The Act abolished the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), transferring its activities and resources to NASA effective October 1, 1958. The Act also created a Civilian-Military Liaison Committee, for the purpose of coordinating civilian and military space applications, and keeping NASA and the Department of Defense "fully and currently informed" of each other's space activities. To this day, the United States has coordinated but separate military and civilian space programs, with much of the former involved in launching military and surveillance craft and, prior to the Partial Test Ban Treaty, planning counter-measures to the anticipated Soviet launch of nuclear warheads into space. The phrase "We came in peace for all mankind", inscribed on a plaque left on the Moon by the crew of Apollo 11, is derived from the Act's declaration of NASA's policy and purpose: "The Congress hereby declares that it is the policy of the United States that activities in space should be devoted to peaceful purposes for the benefit of all mankind." The Act was subsequently amended to remove gender bias, so that this policy statement now reads: "Devotion of Space Activities to Peaceful Purposes for Benefit of All Humankind.--Congress declares that it is the policy of the United States that activities in space should be devoted to peaceful purposes for the benefit of all humankind." July 28-29, 1932: The European Civil War: World War I: The First European War (The European Theater Of World War I): The Aftermath Of World War I: The Aftermath Of World War I In The United States: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Great Depression: The Great Depression In The United States: The Bonus Army (The Bonus March): The Bonus Army Eviction: -- President Herbert Hoover orders the United States Army to forcibly evict the "Bonus Army" of World War I veterans gathered in Washington, D.C.. U.S. Army troops under the command of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Major Dwight D. Eisenhower and Major George S. Patton, attacked and burned the encampments of unemployed World War I veterans. Eight days prior, on July 20, 1932 in Washington, D.C., police fired tear gas at the World War I veterans, part of the Bonus Expeditionary Force, who attempt to march to the White House. Known as the Bonus Army, they were an assemblage of some 43,000 marchers: 17,000 U.S. World War I veterans, their families, and affiliated groups: who gathered in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1932 to demand cash-payment redemption of their service certificates. Organizers called the demonstrators the "Bonus Expeditionary Force", to echo the name of World War I's American Expeditionary Forces, while the media referred to them as the "Bonus Army" or "Bonus Marchers". On June 17, 1932, around a thousand World War I veterans amassed at the United States Capitol as the U.S. Senate deliberated and voted on the Wright Patman Bonus Bill, which had passed the US House of Representatives on June 15th, that would move forward the payment date for World War I veterans to receive the cash bonuses they were to receive in 1945 according to the World War Adjusted Compensation Act of 1924, also known as the Bonus Act. The bill was defeated in the US Senate by a vote of 62-18. The Bonus Army were the 43,000 marchers - 17,000 U.S. World War I veterans, their families, and affiliated groups - who gathered in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1932 to demand cash-payment redemption of their service certificates. Organizers called the demonstrators the "Bonus Expeditionary Force", to echo the name of World War I's American Expeditionary Forces, while the media referred to them as the "Bonus Army" or "Bonus Marchers". The contingent was led by Walter W. Waters, a former sergeant. Many of the war veterans had been out of work since the beginning of the Great Depression. The World War Adjusted Compensation Act of 1924 had awarded them bonuses in the form of certificates they could not redeem until 1945. Each certificate, issued to a qualified veteran soldier, bore a face value equal to the soldier's promised payment compound interest. The principal demand of the Bonus Army was the immediate cash payment of their certificates. On July 28, U.S. Attorney General William D. Mitchell ordered the veterans removed from all government property. Washington police met with resistance, shots were fired and two veterans were wounded and later died. President Herbert Hoover then ordered the Army to assemble on Pennsylvania Avenue to clear the marchers from the area. Army Chief Of Staff General Douglas MacArthur, along with his aide Major Dwight D. Eisenhower, commanded the infantry and cavalry, supported by six tanks under the command of Major George S. Patton . Despite two orders by President Hoover to General MacArthur not to cross the Anacostia bridge into the Bonus Army marcher's camp that night, the marchers with their wives and children were forcibly driven out of their campsite, and their shelters and belongings burned. A second, smaller Bonus March in 1933 at the start of the Roosevelt administration was defused in May with an offer of jobs with the Civilian Conservation Corps at Fort Hunt, Virginia, which most of the group accepted. Those who chose not to work for the CCC by the May 22 deadline were given transportation home. In 1936, Congress overrode President Roosevelt's veto and paid the veterans their bonus nine years early. July 29, 1976: Crime: Crime In The United States: Serial Killings: The Son Of Sam Murders: -- #DOTD: #RIP: David Berkowitz, a.k.a. "The Son Of Sam", kills one person and seriously wounds another in the first of a series of attacks in New York City. David Richard Berkowitz (born Richard David Falco; June 1, 1953), known also as the Son of Sam and the .44 Caliber Killer, is an American serial killer who pleaded guilty to eight separate shooting attacks that began in New York City during the summer of 1976. The crimes were perpetrated with a .44 caliber Bulldog revolver. He killed six people and wounded nine others by July 1977. As the number of victims increased, Berkowitz eluded the biggest police manhunt in the history of New York City while leaving letters that mocked the police and promised further crimes, which were highly publicized by the press. The killing spree terrorized New Yorkers and achieved worldwide notoriety. On the night of August 10, 1977, Berkowitz was taken into custody by New York City police homicide detectives in front of his Yonkers apartment building, and he was subsequently indicted for eight shooting incidents. He confessed to all of them, and initially claimed to have been obeying the orders of a demon, manifested in the form of a dog, "Harvey", who belonged to his neighbor "Sam". Despite his explanation, Berkowitz was found mentally competent to stand trial. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was incarcerated in state prison. He subsequently admitted the dog-and-devil story was a hoax. In the course of further police investigations, Berkowitz was also implicated in many unsolved arsons in the city. Intense coverage of the case by the media lent a kind of celebrity status to Berkowitz, and some observers noted that he seemed to enjoy it. In response, the New York State legislature enacted new legal statutes, known popularly as "Son of Sam laws", designed to keep criminals from profiting financially from the publicity created by their crimes. Despite various amendments and legal challenges, the statutes have remained law in New York, and similar laws have been enacted in several other states. Berkowitz has been incarcerated since his arrest and is serving six consecutive life sentences. During the mid-1990s, he amended his confession to claim that he had been a member of a violent Satanic cult that orchestrated the incidents as ritual murder. He remains the only person ever charged with the shootings. Although some law enforcement authorities have questioned whether Berkowitz's claims are credible, a new investigation of the murders began in 1996, but was suspended indefinitely after inconclusive findings. July 29, 1907: Scouting (The Scout Movement): The Boy Scouts Association: -- Sir Robert Baden-Powell sets up the Brownsea Island Scout Camp in Poole Harbour on the south coast of England. The camp ran from August 1 to August 9, 1907 with boys from different social backgrounds participating in activities around camping, observation, woodcraft, chivalry, lifesaving and patriotism, and is regarded as the foundation of the Scouting movement generally, and the Boy Scouts in particular, with the Girl Scouts and Pathfinder to follow in later years. The Brownsea Island Scout Camp began as a boys' camping event on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour, southern England, organised by Lieutenant-General Baden-Powell to test his ideas for the book Scouting for Boys. Up to the early 1930s, camping by Boy Scouts continued on Brownsea Island. In 1963, a formal 50-acre (20 ha) Scout campsite was opened by Olave Baden-Powell, when the island became a nature conservation area owned by the National Trust. In 1973, a Scout Jamboree was held on the island with 600 Scouts. The worldwide centenary of Scouting took place at the Brownsea Island Scout camp, celebrated on August 1, 2007, the 100th anniversary of the start of the first encampment. Activities by The Scout Association at the campsite included four Scout camps and a Sunrise Ceremony. Named after this one, there is also a Brownsea Island in The Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia, USA, a training, Scouting, and adventure centre. July 29, 1883: #BOTD: Benito Mussolini, Italian politician and journalist, founder of the fascist political movement The Italian Fasci of Combat (Fasci Italiani di Combattimento), leader of the National Fascist Party (Partito Nazionale Fascista, PNF), Prime Minister from 1922 to 1943; constitutional leader of the Italy until 1925, when he dropped the pretense of democracy and established a dictatorshipi (d. April 28, 1945) is #born in Dovia, Italy. Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini was known as Il Duce ("The Leader") and was the founder of Italian Fascism. In 1912, Mussolini had been a leading member of the National Directorate of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI), but was expelled from the PSI for advocating military intervention in World War I, in opposition to the party's stance on neutrality. Mussolini served in the Royal Italian Army during the war until he was wounded and discharged in 1917. Mussolini denounced the PSI, his views now centering on nationalism instead of socialism and later founded the fascist movement which came to oppose egalitarianism and class conflict, instead advocating revolutionary nationalism transcending class lines. On March 23, 1919, in Milan, Italy, Benito Mussolini founded the fascist political movement The Italian Fasci of Combat (Fasci Italiani di Combattimento); Italian Fascism, also known simply as Fascism, is the original fascist ideology, developed in Italy and copied by other countries such as Germany and Austria. Following the March on Rome in October 1922 (an organized mass demonstration in October 1922, which resulted in Benito Mussolini's National Fascist Party (Partito Nazionale Fascista, or PNF) acceding to power in the Kingdom of Italy), Mussolini became the youngest Prime Minister in Italian history until the appointment of Matteo Renzi in February 2014. After removing all political opposition through his secret police and outlawing labor strikes, Mussolini and his followers consolidated their power through a series of laws that transformed the nation into a one-party dictatorship. Within five years, Mussolini had established dictatorial authority by both legal and extraordinary means and aspired to create a totalitarian state. Mussolini remained in power until he was deposed by King Victor Emmanuel III in 1943, but a few months later he became the leader of the Italian Social Republic, a German client regime in northern Italy - Mussolini held this post until his death. In late April 1945, in the wake of near total defeat, Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci attempted to flee to Switzerland; then twenty three years of Fascist rule in Italy abruptly ended as Italian partisans shoot and kill Benito Mussolini. The day before, Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci were arrested in Dongo, Lombardy by two communist partisans known by the nom de guerre (war name) they used, Valerio and Bellini, and Mussolini was identified by the Political Commissar of the partisans' 52nd Garibaldi Brigade, Urbano Lazzaro. After several unsuccessful attempts to take them to Como they were brought to Mezzegra, and they spent their last night in the house of the De Maria family. The next day, Mussolini and Petacci both received a summary execution, shot along with most of the members of their 15-man train, primarily ministers and officials of the Italian Social Republic. The bodies were then hung upside down and pelted with stones by jeering crowds in Milan. He is buried at San Cassiano Cemetery in his hometown of Predappio, Province of Forli-Cesena, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. July 29, 1921: The Aftermath Of World War I: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Weimar Republic (The German Reich, The German Republic): Occultism In German Nationalism: The Thule Society: The National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP): -- Adolf Hitler becomes leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP), commonly referred to in English as the Nazi Party. On January 5, 1919, The German Workers' Party (Deutsche Arbeiterpartei) was founded in Munich by Anton Drexler, a German far-right political leader of the 1920s and member of the Thule Society, a German occultist and volkisch group founded in Munich right after World War I, named after a mythical northern country in Greek legend. The society is notable chiefly as the organization that sponsored the German Workers' Party. The party's membership emerged from the German nationalist, racist and populist Freikorps paramilitary culture, which fought against the communist uprisings in post-World War I Germany. The party was created as a means to draw workers away from communism and into volkisch nationalism. Initially, Nazi political strategy focused on anti-big business, anti-bourgeois and anti-capitalist rhetoric, although such aspects were later downplayed in order to gain the support of industrial entities and in the 1930s the party's focus shifted to anti-Semitic and anti-Marxist themes. On September 12, 1919, Adolf Hitler became member No. 7, though he was simultaneously a spy employed to observe and report on the group's activities by the Germany army. On February 24, 1920, the Nazi Party was founded by Drexler, just as he had founded its precursor, the German Workers' Party. Hitler reorganized it and renamed it the National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, abbreviated NSDAP), commonly referred to in English as the Nazi Party. July 29, 1905: #BOTD: #HBD! Dag Hammarskjold (pronounced "Dawg Hammerwheld"), Swedish economist and diplomat, 2nd Secretary-General of the United Nations, Nobel Prize Laureate (d. September 18, 1961) is #born Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjold in Jonkoping to the noble family Hammarskjold. Dag Hammarskjold still remains the youngest person to have held the post, being only 47 years old when he was appointed in 1953. His second term was cut short when he died in the crash of his DC-6 airplane in Northern Rhodesia while en route to cease-fire negotiations during the Congo Crisis. He is the only person to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize posthumously. Hammarskjold has been referred to as one of the two best secretaries-general of the United Nations, and his appointment has been mentioned as the most notable success for the UN. U.S. president John F. Kennedy called Hammarskjold "the greatest statesman of our century." Dag Hammarskjold died aged 56 along with all 15 other passengers in the suspicious 1961 Ndola Transair Sweden DC-6 Crash, Transair Sweden Flight 001, that may well have been in fact a political assassination, as the crash occurred while Dag Hammarskjold was attempting to negotiate peace in the war-torn Katanga region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Transair Sweden DC-6 passenger aircraft, operating for the United Nations, crashed near Ndola, Northern Rhodesia (present-day Zambia). The crash resulted in the deaths of all people on board, including Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, and 15 others. Hammarskjold had been en route to ceasefire negotiations with Moise Tshombe during the Congo Crisis. Three official inquiries failed to determine conclusively the cause of the crash, which set off a succession crisis at the United Nations. A number of historians and military experts criticize the official inquiries, pointing to evidence of foul play that had been omitted from the inquiries. The three official inquiries failed to determine conclusively the cause of the crash that led to the death of Hammarskjold. The Rhodesian Board of Investigation sent 180 men to search a six-square-kilometer area of the last sector of the aircraft's flight path, looking for evidence as to the cause of the crash. No evidence of a bomb, surface-to-air missile, or hijacking was found. The official report stated that two of the dead Swedish bodyguards had suffered multiple bullet wounds. Medical examination, performed by the initial Rhodesian Board of Investigation and reported in the UN official report, indicated that the wounds were superficial, and that the bullets showed no signs of rifling. They concluded that cartridges had exploded in the fire in proximity to the bodyguards. No evidence of foul play was found in the wreckage of the aircraft. The Rhodesian Board concluded that the pilot flew too low and struck trees, thereby bringing the aircraft to the ground. The official inquiry has come under scrutiny and criticism from historians, who point to a number of conclusions made which they claim were done to steer focus away from the assassination angle. The official report dismissed a number of pieces of evidence that would have supported the view that Hammarskjold was assassinated. Some of these dismissals have been criticized, such as the conclusion that bullet wounds could have been caused by bullets exploding in a fire. Expert tests have questioned this conclusion, arguing that exploding bullets could not break the surface of the skin. Major C. F. Westell, a ballistics authority, said, "I can certainly describe as sheer nonsense the statement that cartridges of machine guns or pistols detonated in a fire can penetrate a human body." He based his statement on a large scale experiment that had been done to determine if military fire brigades would be in danger working near munitions depots. Other experts conducted and filmed tests showing that bullets heated to the point of explosion did not achieve sufficient velocity to penetrate their box container. Despite the multiple official inquiries that failed to find evidence of assassination or other forms of foul play, several individuals have continued to advance a theory of the crash being deliberately caused by hostile interests; the day after the crash, former U.S. President Harry Truman commented that Hammarskjold "was on the point of getting something done when they killed him. Notice that I said 'when they killed him'." At the time of Hammarskjold's death, the Central Intelligence Agency and other Western agencies were actively involved in the political situation in the Congo, which culminated in Belgian and US support for the secession of Katanga and the assassination of former prime minister Patrice Lumumba. The Belgian government had a vested interest in maintaining their control over much of the country's copper industry during the Congolese transition from colonial rule to independence. Concerns about the nationalisation of the copper industry could have provided a financial incentive to remove either Lumumba or Hammarskjold. On July 29, 2005, Norwegian Army Major general Bjorn Egge gave an interview to the newspaper Aftenposten on the events surrounding Hammarskjold's death. According to Egge, who had been the first UN officer to see the body, Hammarskjold had a hole in his forehead, and this hole was subsequently airbrushed from photos taken of the body. It appeared to Egge that Hammarskjold had been thrown from the plane, and grass and leaves in his hands might indicate that he survived the crash - and that he had tried to scramble away from the wreckage. Egge did not officially claim that the wound was a gunshot wound. According to a dozen witnesses interviewed by Swedish aid worker Goran Bjorkdahl in the 2000s, Hammarskjold's plane was shot down by another aircraft. Bjorkdahl also reviewed previously unavailable archive documents and internal UN communications. He believes that there was an intentional shoot down for the benefit of mining companies like Union Miniere. In April 2014, the Guardian published evidence implicating Jan van Risseghem, a military pilot who served with the RAF during World War II, later with the Belgian Air Force, and who became known as the pilot of Moise Tshombe in Katanga. The article claims that an American NSA employee, former naval pilot Commander Charles Southall, working at the NSA listening station in Cyprus in 1961 shortly after midnight on the night of the crash, heard an intercept of a pilot's commentary in the air over Ndola, 5,300 km (3,300 mi) away. Southall recalled the pilot saying: "I see a transport plane coming low. All the lights are on. I'm going down to make a run on it. Yes, it is the Transair DC-6. It's the plane," adding that his voice was "cool and professional". Then he heard the sound of gunfire and the pilot exclaiming: "I've hit it. There are flames! It's going down. It's crashing!" Based on aircraft registration and availability with the Katangese Air Force, registration KAT-93, a Fouga CM.170 Magister would be the most likely aircraft used and the website Belgian Wings claims that van Risseghem piloted the Magisters for the KAF in 1961. A further article was published by The Guardian in January 2019, repeating the allegations against van Risseghem and citing further evidence uncovered by the makers of the documentary Cold Case Hammarskjold, including refutations of his alibi that he was not flying at the time of the crash. In December 2018, the German freelance historian Torben Gulstorff published an article in the Lobster magazine, arguing that a German Dornier DO-28A may have been used for the attack on Hammarskjold's DC-6. The plane was delivered to Katanga by end of August 1961 and would have been technically capable of accomplishing such an assault. In 2011, Who Killed Hammarskjold? by Susan Williams, a University of London scholar of decolonisation in Africa, outlined several serious doubts about the accidental character of the plane crash in 1961. It led to the formation of independent, unofficial commission of inquiry in 2012 to provide an opinion on whether there was new evidence that would justify the UN re-opening its 1962 inquiry - the commission was headed by the British jurist Stephen Sedley. The Sedley commission's report was presented on September 9, 2013, at the Peace Palace in The Hague. It recommended that the UN re-open its inquiry "pursuant to General Assembly resolution 1759 (XVII) of 26 October 1962". Its findings formed the basis of the constitution of a panel of experts, and in March 2015 the appointment of Eminent Person Mohamed Chande Othman at the UN to support the ongoing Hammarskjold Commission. On August 19, 1998, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, chairman of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), stated that recently uncovered letters had implicated MI5, the CIA, and then South African intelligence services in the crash. One TRC letter said that a bomb in the aircraft's wheel bay was set to detonate when the wheels came down for a landing. Tutu said that they were unable to investigate the truth of the letters or the allegations that South African or Western intelligence agencies played a role in the crash. The British Foreign Office suggested that they may have been created as Soviet misinformation or disinformation. Dag Hammarskjold is buried at the Uppsala Old Cemetery in Uppsala, Sweden. It opened the ports of Kanagawa and four other Japanese cities to trade and granted extraterritoriality to foreigners, among a number of trading stipulations. The treaty followed the 1854 Convention Of Kanagawa, which granted coaling rights for US ships and allowed for a US Consul in Shimoda. Although Commodore Matthew Perry secured fuel for US ships and protection for US sailors, he left the important matter of trading rights to Townsend Harris, another US envoy who negotiated with the Tokugawa shogunate; the treaty is therefore often referred to as the "Harris Treaty". It took two years to break down Japanese resistance, but with the threat of looming British demands for similar privileges, the Tokugawa government eventually capitulated. July 29, 1950: Korea: The History Of Korea: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Korean Conflict: The Cold War (1947-1953): The Cold War In Asia: The Korean War: War Crimes: Massacres Of The Korean War: The No Gun Ri Massacre (July 26-29, 1950) (Korean: Nogeunli Yangmin Hagsal Sageon): -- After four days, the No Gun Ri Massacre, a mass killing of South Korean refugees by U.S. military air and ground fire near the village of Nogeun-ri in central South Korea between July 26 and 29, 1950, ends when the US Army 7th Cavalry Regiment is withdrawn. In 2005, a South Korean government inquest certified the names of 163 dead or missing and 55 wounded, and added that many other victims' names were not reported. The No Gun Ri Peace Foundation estimates 250-300 were killed, mostly women and children. The incident was little-known outside Korea until publication of an Associated Press (AP) story in 1999 in which veterans of the U.S. Army unit involved, the 7th Cavalry Regiment, corroborated survivors' accounts. The AP also uncovered declassified U.S. Army orders to fire on approaching civilians because of reports of North Korean infiltration of refugee groups. In 2001, the United States Army conducted an investigation and, after previously rejecting survivors' claims, acknowledged the killings, but described the three-day event as "an unfortunate tragedy inherent to war and not a deliberate killing". Then-President Bill Clinton issued a statement of regret, adding the next day that "things happened which were wrong", but survivors' demands for an apology and compensation were rejected. South Korean investigators disagreed with the U.S. report, saying they believed that 7th Cavalry troops were ordered to fire on the refugees. The survivors' group called the U.S. report a "whitewash". The AP later discovered additional archival documents showing that U.S. commanders ordered troops to "shoot" and "fire on" civilians at the war front during this period; these declassified documents had been found but not disclosed by the Pentagon investigators. Among the undisclosed documents was a letter from the U.S. ambassador in South Korea stating that the U.S. military had adopted a theater-wide policy of firing on approaching refugee groups. Despite demands, the U.S. investigation was not reopened. Prompted by the exposure of No Gun Ri, survivors of similar alleged incidents from 1950-51 filed reports with the Seoul government. In 2008, an investigative commission said more than 200 cases of alleged large-scale killings by the U.S. military had been registered, mostly air attacks. An electrical anomaly caused a Zuni rocket on an F-4B Phantom to fire, striking an external fuel tank of an A-4 Skyhawk. The flammable jet fuel spilled across the flight deck, ignited, and triggered a chain reaction of explosions that killed 134 sailors and injured 161. At the time, Forrestal was engaged in combat operations in the Gulf Of Tonkin, during the Vietnam War. The ship survived, but with damage exceeding 72M USD, not including the damage to aircraft. Future United States Senator John McCain and future four-star admiral and U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Ronald J. Zlatoper were among the survivors. Another on-board officer, Lieutenant Tom Treanore, later returned to the ship as her commander and retired an admiral. The incident was the second of three serious fires to strike American carriers in the 1960s. A 1966 fire aboard USS Oriskany killed 44 and injured 138 and a 1969 fire aboard USS Enterprise killed 28 and injured 314. The disaster prompted the Navy to revise its firefighting practices. It also modified its weapon handling procedures and installed a deck wash down system on all carriers. The newly established Farrier Firefighting School in Norfolk, Virginia was named after Chief Gerald W. Farrier, the commander of Damage Control Team 8, who was among the first to die in the fire and explosions. July 29, 1900: #BOTD: #HBD! Don Redman, African American jazz musician, arranger, bandleader, singer and composer (d. November 30, 1964) is #born Donald Matthew Redman in Piedmont, Mineral County, West Virginia. His father was a music teacher, his mother was a singer. Don began playing the trumpet at the age of three, joined his first band at the age of six and by the age of 12 was proficient on all wind instruments ranging from trumpet to oboe as well as piano. He studied at Storer College in Harper's Ferry and at the Boston Conservatory, then joined Billy Page's Broadway Syncopaters in New York City. (He was the uncle of saxophonist Dewey Redman, and thus great-uncle of saxophonist Joshua Redman and trumpeter Carlos Redman.) In 1923, Redman joined the Fletcher Henderson orchestra, mostly playing clarinet and saxophones. He began writing arrangements, and Redman did much to formulate the sound that was to become swing. A trademark of Redman's arrangements was the band playing harmony under written solos. He played brass and reed sections off each other in a call-response pattern, having one section punctuate the figures of another, and moved the melody around different orchestral sections and soloists. His use of this technique was sophisticated, highly innovative, and formed the basis of much big band jazz writing in the following decades. In 1927 Jean Goldkette convinced Redman to join McKinney's Cotton Pickers as their musical director and leader. He was responsible for their great success and arranged over half of their music (splitting the arranging duties with John Nesbitt through 1931). Redman was occasionally featured as their vocalist, displaying a charming, humorous vocal style. Redman then formed his own band in 1931, which got a residency at the famous Manhattan jazz club Connie's Inn. Redman signed with Brunswick Records and also did a series of radio broadcasts. Redman and his Orchestra also provided music for the animated short I Heard, part of the Betty Boop series produced by Fleischer Studios and distributed by Paramount. Redman composed original music for the short, which was released on September 1, 1933. The Brunswick records Redman made between 1931-1934 were some of the most complex pre-swing hot jazz arrangements of popular tunes. Redman's band didn't rely on just a driving rhythm or great soloists, but it had an overall level of arranging sophistication that was seldom heard by other black bands of the period. The popular vocalist, Harlan Lattimore, provided about half of the vocals during this period. In 1933, his band made a Vitaphone short film for Warner Bros. Redman recorded for Brunswick through 1934. He then did a number of sides for ARC in 1936 (issued on their Vocalion, Perfect, Melotone, etc.) and in 1937, he pioneered a series of swing re-arrangements of old classic pop tunes for the Variety label. His use of a swinging vocal group (called "The Swing Choir") was very modern and even today, quite usual, with Redman's sophisticated counterpoint melodies. He signed with Bluebird in 1938 and recorded with them until 1940, when he disbanded. When Redman disbanded his orchestra, he concentrated on freelance work writing arrangements. Some of his arrangements became hits for Jimmy Dorsey, Count Basie, and Harry James. He traveled to Europe in 1946 leading an all-star band that included Don Byas, Tyree Glenn, and Billy Taylor. He appeared on Uptown Jubilee on the CBS Television network for the 1949 season. In the 1950s he was music director for singer Pearl Bailey. In the early 1960s he played piano for the Georgia Minstrels Concert and soprano sax with Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle's band. He was named a member of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame on May 6, 2009. Don Redman died in New York City, aged 64; according to his brother-in-law, Velibor Pedevski, the cause was liver failure. His burial details are not publicly disclosed. Wilkerson, publisher and founder of The Hollywood Reporter, published a "TradeView" column entitled "A Vote For Joe Stalin". It named as Communist sympathizers Dalton Trumbo, Maurice Rapf, Lester Cole, Howard Koch, Harold Buchman, John Wexley, Ring Lardner Jr., Harold Salemson, Henry Meyers, Theodore Strauss, and John Howard Lawson. In August and September 1946, Wilkerson published other columns containing names of numerous purported Communists and sympathizers. They became known as "Billy's List" and "Billy's Blacklist". In 1962, when Wilkerson died, his THR obituary stated he had "named names, pseudonyms and card numbers and was widely credited with being chiefly responsible for preventing communists from becoming entrenched in Hollywood production - something that foreign film unions have been unable to do." In a 65th-anniversary article in 2012, Wilkerson's son apologized for the paper's role in the blacklist, stating that his father was motivated by revenge for his own thwarted ambition to own a studio. On October 20, 1947, The House Un-American Activities Committee began its investigation into Communist infiltration of Hollywood, drawing upon the names in The Hollywood Reporter's list to subpoenae a number of persons working in the Hollywood film industry to testify at hearings. The committee had declared its intention to investigate whether Communist agents and sympathizers had been planting propaganda in American films, resulting in a blacklist that prevents some from working in the industry for years. Today, July 29, 2026

July 29, 1914: #BOTD: #HBD! Irwin Corey, American stand-up comic, actor and activist (d. February 6, 2017) is #born Irwin Eli Cohen in Brooklyn, New York. Often billed as Professor Irwin Corey, The World's Foremost Authority, he introduced his unscripted, improvisational style of stand-up comedy at the San Francisco club, the hungry i. Lenny Bruce described Corey as "one of the most brilliant comedians of all time". Poverty-stricken after his father deserted the family, his mother was forced to place him and his five siblings in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum of New York, where Corey remained until his early teens. He then rode in boxcars out to California, and enrolled himself at Belmont High School in Los Angeles. During the Great Depression he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and, while working his way back East, became a featherweight Golden Gloves boxing champion. In 1938, Corey returned to New York, where he got a job writing and performing in Pins and Needles, a musical comedy revue about a union organizer in the "garment district". He claimed that he was fired from this job for his union organizing activities. Five years later, he was working in New Faces of 1943 and appearing at the Village Vanguard, doing his stand-up comedy routine. He was drafted during World War II, but was discharged after six months, after he claimed he convinced an Army psychiatrist that he was a homosexual. From the late 1940s, he cultivated his "Professor" character. Dressed in seedy formal wear and sneakers, with his bushy hair sprouting in all directions, Corey would amble on stage in a preoccupied manner, then begin his monologue with "However ..." He created a new style of double-talk comedy; instead of making up nonsense words like "krelman" and "trilloweg", like double-talker Al Kelly, the Professor would season his speech with many long and florid, but authentic, words. The professor would then launch into observations about anything under the sun, but seldom actually making sense. Changing topics suddenly, he would wander around the stage, pontificating all the while. His quick wit allowed him to hold his own against the most stubborn straight man, heckler or interviewer. One fan of Corey's comedy, despite their radically different politics, was Ayn Rand. Theatre critic Kenneth Tynan wrote of the Professor in The New Yorker, "Corey is a cultural clown, a parody of literacy, a travesty of all that our civilization holds dear, and one of the funniest grotesques in America. He is Chaplin's tramp with a college education". During the 1960 election, Corey campaigned for president on Hugh Hefner's Playboy ticket. In 1951, Corey appeared as "Abou Ben Atom", the Genie, in the cult flop Broadway musical Flahooley along with Yma Sumac, the Bil and Cora Baird Marionettes and Barbara Cook (in her Broadway debut). Corey's performance of "Springtime Cometh" can be heard on the show's original cast album. Corey supported Communist/Socialist left-wing politics. He appeared in support of Cuban children, Mumia Abu-Jamal, and the American Communist Party, and was blacklisted in the 1950s, the effects of which he stated lingered throughout his life. Corey appeared occasionally in 1950s television as a character actor. He appeared in an episode of The Phil Silvers Show titled "Bilko's Grand Hotel", in which Corey plays an unkempt Bowery bum being passed off as a hotelier by Sgt. Bilko. The Professor was a frequent guest comic on variety shows and a guest panelist on game shows during the 1960s and 1970s. Corey became so synonymous with comic erudition that, when a Providence, Rhode Island television station, WJAR-TV, wanted a spokesman to explain changes in network affiliations, Corey got the job. Lecturing with pointer in hand, Corey manipulated magnetic signs to demonstrate how television schedules would be disrupted. By the end of the commercial, the visual aids were in shambles and the professor had meandered from his original point. Corey would do the same promos for WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee in 1977 during the time that rival stations WITI and WISN-TV switched affiliations. Corey often appeared on The Steve Allen Show (1962-1964), whereupon he would end his rambling stand-up routine with Allen and stage hands literally chasing Corey with a giant butterfly net. He later guest starred on The Donald O'Connor Show in 1968. Corey appeared in various Broadway productions, including as a gravedigger in a production of Hamlet. During the last 1970s and early 1980s, he was a frequent guest on The Merv Griffin Show. Corey appeared in various Broadway productions, including as a gravedigger in a production of Hamlet. When the publicity-shy Thomas Pynchon won the National Book Award Fiction Citation for Gravity's Rainbow in 1974, he asked Corey to accept it on his behalf. The New York Times described the resulting speech as "...a series of bad jokes and mangled syntax which left some people roaring with laughter and others perplexed." In 1975, Corey gave a typically long-winded, nonsensical performance in New York City for journalists waiting for the Rolling Stones to announce the band's 1975 Tour of the Americas. The press was still listening to Corey ramble on when they finally noticed that the Stones were playing "Brown Sugar" on a flatbed truck driving down Fifth Avenue. Corey first performed on Late Night with David Letterman in 1982, but never returned, which Cory claimed was a result of the blacklist still being in effect. In 2009, filmmaker Jordan Stone began filming what was to become an award-winning documentary film called "Irwin and Fran". Political activist and fellow stand-up comedian Dick Gregory shared some in-depth and provocative memories and Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon narrated in a very personal tone. The film won The People's Film Festival Best Film Award in 2013. Corey was married for 70 years to Frances Berman Corey, who died in May 2011. The couple had two children, the late Margaret Davis, nee Corey, an actress, and Richard Corey, a painter. In 2011, the New York Times reported that Corey was still performing, and also had been soliciting change from drivers near his Manhattan residence, and donating the money to Cuban children. His agent said that Corey was not in financial distress, and a neighbor described it as a performance. During the 2016 Democratic Party presidential primaries, Corey endorsed Vermont United States Senator Bernie Sanders for the nomination and presidency. Corey died at the age of 102 on February 6, 2017, at his apartment in Manhattan with his son, Richard, at his side. His remains were cremated, and the ashes given to Richard. On April 25, 1988, John Demjanjuk, a retired Ukrainian-American auto worker living in the Seven Hills, Ohio, accused of being prisoner guard Ivan Marchenko and known at Treblinka extermination camp as "Ivan The Terrible", and of being Ivan Demjanjuk, a prisoner guard at the Sobibor and Majdanek death camps, was sentenced to death for war crimes committed during World War II. The Israeli Supreme Court's 405-page ruling included the following: "The main issue of the indictment sheet filed against the appellant was his identification as Ivan The Terrible, an operator of the gas chambers in the extermination camp at Treblinka... By virtue of this gnawing [new evidence indicating mistaken identity]... we restrained ourselves from convicting the appellant of the horrors of Treblinka. Ivan Demjanjuk has been acquitted by us, because of doubt, of the terrible charges attributed to Ivan The Terrible of Treblinka. This was the proper course for judges who cannot examine the heart and mind, but have only what their eyes see and read.... July 29, 1938: #BOTD: #HBD! Peter Jennings, Canadian-American journalist, news anchor, documentary host, and author who served as the sole anchor of ABC World News Tonight for 22 years from 1983 until his death from lung cancer (d. August 7, 2005) is #born Peter Charles Archibald Ewart Jennings in Toronto, Ontario. Despite dropping out of high school, Peter Charles Archibald Ewart Jennings CM transformed himself into one of American television's most prominent journalists. Jennings started his career early, hosting a Canadian radio show at the age of nine. He began his professional career with CJOH-TV in Ottawa during its early years, anchoring the local newscasts and hosting a teen dance show, Saturday Date, on Saturdays. In 1965, ABC News tapped him to anchor its flagship evening news program. His inexperience was attacked by critics and others in television news, making for a difficult first stint in the anchor chair. Jennings became a foreign correspondent in 1968, reporting from the Middle East. He returned as one of World News Tonight's three anchors in 1978, and was promoted to the role of sole anchor in 1983. Jennings was also known for his marathon coverage of breaking news stories, staying on the air for 15 or more hours straight to anchor the live broadcast of events such as the outbreak of the Gulf War in 1991, the Millennium celebrations in 2000, and the September 11 attacks in 2001. In addition to anchoring, he was the host of many ABC News special reports and moderated several American presidential debates. Jennings was always fascinated with the United States and became a naturalized United States citizen in 2003. Along with Tom Brokaw at NBC and Dan Rather at CBS, Jennings formed part of the "Big Three" news anchors who dominated American evening network news from the early 1980s until his death of lung cancer in his New York apartment at the age of 67, a death which closely followed the retirements of Brokaw in 2004 and Rather. His fourth wife Kayce Freed, two children, and sister were at his side when he died. Just after 11:30 pm EDT that evening, Charles Gibson broke into local news in the eastern U.S. and regular programming on ABC's western affiliates to announce Jennings's death. The anchor's ABC colleagues, including Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, and Ted Koppel, shared their thoughts on Jennings's death. The next morning, Brokaw and Rather fondly remembered their former rival on the morning news shows. "Peter, of the three of us, was our prince," said Brokaw on Today. "He seemed so timeless. He had such elan and style." Canada's television networks led off their morning news shows with the news of Jennings's death and had remembrances from their "big three" anchors, Peter Mansbridge at the CBC, Lloyd Robertson at CTV, and Kevin Newman (himself a former colleague of Jennings at ABC) at Global. American President George W. Bush and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin offered statements of condolence to the press. On August 10, 2005, ABC aired a two-hour special, Peter Jennings: Reporter, with archival clips of his reports and interviews with colleagues and friends. The special drew more than nine million viewers, and was the most watched television program of the night. For the week of his death, World News Tonight placed number one in the ratings race for the first time since June 2004. Jennings's widow, Kayce Freed, and family held a private service in New York. Jennings's body was cremated and his ashes split in half. Half of his ashes remained in his home on Long Island and the other half was placed in his summer home in the Gatineau Hills, near Ottawa. The 57th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 18, 2005, included a tribute to Jennings by Brokaw and Rather. A public memorial service for Jennings was held two days later at Carnegie Hall. Notable journalists, political leaders, and other friends of Jennings attended. Jennings left a 50M USD estate: half went to Freed, and most of the rest to his son and daughter. July 29, 615: The Maya: The History Of The Maya: Royal Accessions: Successions To The Throne Of Palenque: -- K'inich Janaab Pakal I, also known as Pacal or Pacal the Great (March 24, 603 - August 29, 683), ascends the throne of the Maya city-state of Palenque as the Late Classic period of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican Ajaw (Mayan: variously rendered as "leader", "ruler", "lord", "king", or "queen", depending on the individual) at the age of 12, ruling until his death. Pakal reigned 68 years, the fifth-longest verified regnal period of any sovereign monarch in history, the longest in world history for more than a millennium, and still the longest of any residing monarch in the history of the Americas. During his reign, Pakal was responsible for the construction or extension of some of Palenque's most notable surviving inscriptions and monumental architecture. Pakal is perhaps best known in popular culture for his depiction on the carved lid of his sarcophagus, which has been the subject of ancient astronaut speculations since its appearance in Erich von Daniken's 1968 best-seller Chariots of the Gods? Von Daniken reproduced a drawing of the sarcophagus lid (though incorrectly labelling it as being from Copan) and compared Pakal's pose to that of Project Mercury astronauts in the 1960s; he interpreted drawings underneath Pakal as rockets, and offered the sarcophagus lid as possible evidence of an extraterrestrial influence on the ancient Maya. This interpretation has been denounced by archaeologists, epigraphers, and art historians of the Maya, who point out that von Daniken's claim relies solely upon visual inspection, without paying heed to the broader archaeological context nor additional research on Classic Maya artistic conventions, symbolism, cosmology, and written history. July 29, 1567: The English Monarchy (The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of England): The Scottish Monarchy (The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of Scotland): The Irish Monarchy (The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of Ireland): Coronations: -- The Coronation Of James VI: The infant James VI, son of Mary, Queen Of Scots (1542-1587) and Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, Duke of Albany (1546-1567), is crowned King of Scotland by Adam Bothwell, Bishop of Orkney, in the Church of the Holy Rude in Stirling, Scotland. King James VI And I, King Of Scotland as James VI from July 24, 1567 and King Of England and Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish and English crowns on March 24 1603 until his death (June 19, 1566 - March 27, 1625) was born James Charles Stuart in Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland, the only son of Mary, Queen Of Scots, and her second husband, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. As the eldest son and heir apparent of the monarch, James automatically became Duke of Rothesay and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, Both Mary and Darnley were great-grandchildren of Henry VII of England through Margaret Tudor, the older sister of Henry VIII, thus James as a great-great-grandson of Henry VII, King Of England and Lord of Ireland, was a potential successor to all three thrones. Mary's rule over Scotland was insecure, and she and her husband, being Roman Catholics, faced a rebellion by Protestant noblemen. During Mary's and Darnley's difficult marriage, Darnley secretly allied himself with the rebels and conspired in the murder of the queen's private secretary, David Rizzio, just three months before James's birth. Although James wanted to bring about a closer union between the kingdoms of Scotland and England, they remained individual sovereign states, with their own parliaments, judiciaries, and laws, both ruled by James in personal union. He succeeded to the Scottish throne at the age of thirteen months, after his mother was compelled to abdicate in his favour. Four different regents governed during his minority, which ended officially in 1578, though he did not gain full control of his government until 1583. In 1603, he succeeded Elizabeth I, the last Tudor monarch of England and Ireland, who died childless. He continued to reign in all three kingdoms for 22 years, a period known as the Jacobean era, until his death in 1625. After the Union Of The Crowns, he based himself in England (the largest of the three realms) from 1603, returning to Scotland only once, in 1617, and styled himself "King of Great Britain and Ireland". He was a major advocate of a single parliament for England and Scotland. In his reign, the Plantation of Ulster and English colonisation of the Americas began. At 57 years and 246 days, James's reign in Scotland was the longest of any Scottish monarch. He achieved most of his aims in Scotland but faced great difficulties in England, including the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 and repeated conflicts with the English Parliament. Under James, the "Golden Age" of Elizabethan literature and drama continued, with writers such as William Shakespeare, John Donne, Ben Jonson, and Francis Bacon contributing to a flourishing literary culture. James himself was a prolific writer, authoring works such as Daemonologie (1597) (a study on demonology and the methods demons used to bother troubled men, a book which endorses the practice of witch hunting), The True Law of Free Monarchies (1598), and Basilikon Doron (1599). He sponsored the translation of the Bible into English later named after him, the Authorized King James Version, and the 1604 revision of the Book of Common Prayer. Anthony Weldon claimed that James had been termed "the wisest fool in Christendom", an epithet associated with his character ever since. Since the latter half of the 20th century, historians have tended to revise James's reputation and treat him as a serious and thoughtful monarch. He was strongly committed to a peace policy, and tried to avoid involvement in religious wars, especially the Thirty Years' War that devastated much of Central Europe. He tried but failed to prevent the rise of hawkish elements in the English Parliament who wanted war with Spain. James VI And I died at Theobalds House in Hertfordshire, England during a violent attack of dysentery, aged 58. He was succeeded by his second son, Charles I. James's funeral on May 7 was a magnificent but disorderly affair. Bishop John Williams of Lincoln preached the sermon, observing, "King Solomon died in Peace, when he had lived about sixty years ... and so you know did King James". The sermon was later printed as Great Britain's Salomon [sic]. James is buried in Westminster Abbey. The position of the tomb was lost for many years until his lead coffin was found in the Henry VII vault, during an excavation in the 19th century. ========= July 29, 1565: The Scottish Monarchy (The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of Scotland): Royal Weddings: -- The widowed Mary, Queen Of Scots marries Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, Duke of Albany, at Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, Scotland. Their son would be crowned King Of Scotland two years later on the same date. ========= Mary, Queen Of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I, Queen Of Scotland from December 14, 1542 to July 24, 1567 (December 8, 1542 - February 8, 1587) was born at Linlithgow Palace, Scotland, to King James V and his French second wife, Mary of Guise. The only surviving legitimate child of James V of Scotland, she was six days old when her father died and she acceded to the throne. She spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents, and in 1558, she married the Dauphin of France, Francis. He ascended the French throne as King Francis II in 1559, and Mary briefly became queen consort of France, until his death in December 1560. Widowed, Mary returned to Scotland, arriving in Leith on 19 August 1561. Four years later, she married her first cousin, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, but their union was unhappy. In February 1567, his residence was destroyed by an explosion, and Darnley was found murdered in the garden. James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, was generally believed to have orchestrated Darnley's death, but he was acquitted of the charge in April 1567, and the following month he married Mary. Following an uprising against the couple, Mary was imprisoned in on an island in Loch Leven in the Perth and Kinross local authority area of Scotland. On July 24, 1567, she was forced to abdicate in favour of James VI, her one-year-old son by Darnley. After an unsuccessful attempt to regain the throne, she fled southwards seeking the protection of her first cousin once removed, Queen Elizabeth I Of England. Mary had previously claimed Elizabeth's throne as her own and was considered the legitimate sovereign of England by many English Catholics, including participants in a rebellion known as the Rising of the North. Perceiving her as a threat, Elizabeth had her confined in various castles and manor houses in the interior of England. After eighteen and a half years in custody, Mary was found guilty of plotting to assassinate Elizabeth in 1586. She was beheaded the following year. ========= Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley (c. 1546 - February 10, 1567), was an English nobleman who was the second husband of Mary, Queen Of Scots, and the father of James VI of Scotland and I of England. Through his parents, he had claims to both the Scottish and English thrones, and from his marriage in 1565 he was king consort of Scotland. Many contemporary narratives describing his life and death refer to him as simply Lord Darnley, his title as heir apparent to the Earldom of Lennox. Less than a year after the birth of his son, Darnley was murdered at Kirk o' Field, apparently smothered. Suspicion quickly fell on James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, and his supporters, notably Archibald Douglas, Parson of Douglas, whose shoes were found at the scene, and on Mary herself. Bothwell had long been suspected of having designs on the throne, and his close relationship with the queen gave rise to rumours they were sexually intimate. This was viewed as a motive for Bothwell to have Darnley murdered, with help from some of the nobility and seemingly with royal approval. Mary had been looking at options for removing Darnley, and had discussed ideas at Craigmillar Castle in November 1566, though her ideas were for divorce. The problem was the risk of making her son illegitimate. Soon after Darnley's death, Bothwell and Mary left Edinburgh together. There are two points of view about the circumstances: in the first, Bothwell kidnapped the queen, took her to Dunbar Castle, and raped her. In the second, Mary was a willing participant in the kidnapping, and the story of rape was a fabrication, so her honour and reputation were not ruined by her marriage to a man widely suspected of murder. Mary later miscarried twins by Bothwell while a prisoner at Lochleven Castle. A soldier under the pay of Bothwell, Captain William Blackadder of the Clan Blackadder, was one of the first non-participants to happen upon the scene, and for that reason was treated as a suspect. He was convicted and executed by being hanged, drawn and quartered before each of his limbs was nailed to the gates of a different Scottish town. Bothwell was put on trial in Edinburgh and found not guilty. Suspicions that Mary colluded with conspirators in her husband's death or that she took no action to prevent his death led to the loss of her supporters and the loss of the Scottish crown. July 29, 1864: The American Civil War (The Civil War, The War Between The States): American Spies: American Civil War Spies: Confederate Spies (Confederate States Of America Spies): -- Belle Boyd, dubbed The Cleopatra Of The Secession, Siren Of The Shenandoah, and later The Confederate Mata Hari, Confederate spy, is arrested by Union troops and brought to the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. the next day. Boyd had been arrested at least six times before but somehow evaded incarceration... By late July 1862, detective Allan Pinkerton had assigned three men to work on her case, and she was finally captured by Union officials after her lover gave her up. An inquiry was held on August 7, 1862, concerning violations of orders that Boyd be kept in close custody. She was held for a month before being released on August 29, 1862, when she was exchanged at Fort Monroe. She was arrested again in June 1863, but was released after contracting typhoid fever. Belle Boyd (May 9, 1844 - June 11, 1900) was born Maria Isabella Boyd in Martinsburg, Virginia (now part of West Virginia). She conducted her spy operations from her father's hotel in Front Royal, Virginia, and provided valuable information to Confederate General Stonewall Jackson in 1862. Boyd's espionage career began by chance. According to her 1866 account, a band of Union army soldiers heard that she had Confederate flags in her room on July 4, 1861, and they came to investigate. They hung a Union flag outside her home. Then one of the men cursed at her mother, which enraged Boyd. She pulled out a pistol and shot the man, who died some hours later. A board of inquiry exonerated her of murder, but sentries were posted around the house and officers kept close track of her activities. She profited from this enforced familiarity, charming at least one of the officers whom she named in her memoir as Captain Daniel Keily... She wrote in her memoir that she was indebted to Keily "for some very remarkable effusions, some withered flowers, and a great deal of important information." She conveyed those secrets to Confederate officers via her slave Eliza Hopewell, who carried them in a hollowed-out watch case. Boyd was caught on her first attempt at spying and told that she could be sentenced to death. General James Shields and his staff gathered in the parlor of the local hotel in mid-May 1862. Boyd hid in the closet in the room, eavesdropping through a knothole that she enlarged in the door. She learned that Shields had been ordered east from Front Royal, Virginia. That night, she rode through Union lines, using false papers to bluff her way past the sentries, and reported the news to Colonel Turner Ashby, who was scouting for the Confederates. She then returned to town. When the Confederates advanced on Front Royal on May 23, Boyd ran to greet Stonewall Jackson's men, avoiding enemy fire that put bullet holes in her skirt, as according to her memoir. She urged an officer to inform Jackson that "the Yankee force is very small [...] Tell him to charge right down and he will catch them all." Jackson did and wrote a note of gratitude to her: "I thank you, for myself and for the army, for the immense service that you have rendered your country today." For her contributions, she was awarded the Southern Cross of Honor. Jackson also gave her captain and honorary aide-de-camp positions. In March 1864, Boyd attempted to travel to England, but she was intercepted by a Union blockade and sent to Canada where she met Union naval officer Samuel Wylde Hardinge. The two married in England. and had a daughter, Grace. Boyd became an actress in England after her husband's death to support her daughter. Following the death of her husband in 1866, she and her daughter returned to the United States. Boyd assumed the stage name Nina Benjamin to perform in several cities, eventually ending up in New Orleans where she married John Swainston Hammond in March 1869, a former British Army officer who fought for the Union Army during the Civil War. They had two sons and two daughters; their first son died as an infant. Boyd divorced Hammond in 1884 and married Nathaniel Rue High in 1885. She subsequently began touring the country giving dramatic lectures of her life as a Civil War spy. Boyd published a highly fictionalized narrative of her war experiences in the two-volume Belle Boyd in Camp and Prison. She died of a heart attack in Kilbourn City, Wisconsin at age 56. She is buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells, with members of the Grand Army Of The Republic as her pallbearers. For years, her grave simply read: "BELLE BOYD | CONFEDERATE SPY | BORN IN VIRGINIA | DIED IN WISCONSIN | ERECTED BY A COMRADE". July 29, 1848: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Revolutions Of 1848 (The Springtime Of The Peoples, The Springtime Of Nations): Ireland: Irish History: Famines: Famines In Ireland: The Great Hunger In Ireland (1845-1852) (The Irish Potato Famine, The Great Famine, The Great Famine Of Ireland, The Great Hunger [Irish: an Gorta Mor], An Drochshaol [Irish: "Tthe Bad Life", "The Hard Times"]: Irish Nationalism: The Young Ireland Rebellion (The Young Irelander Rebellion, The Tipperary Revolt): -- An unsuccessful nationalist revolt against British rule is put down by police in Tipperary, Ireland, then in the United Kingdom. The Young Irelander Rebellion was a failed Irish nationalist uprising led by the Young Ireland movement, part of the wider Revolutions of 1848 that affected most of Europe. It took place on July 29, 1848 at Farranrory, a small settlement about 4.3 km north-northeast of the village of Ballingarry, South Tipperary. After being chased by a force of Young Irelanders and their supporters, an Irish Constabulary unit took refuge in a house and held those inside as hostages. A several-hour gunfight followed, but the rebels fled after a large group of police reinforcements arrived. It is sometimes called the Tipperary Revolt, Famine Rebellion (since it took place during the Great Irish Famine), or the Battle of Ballingarry. The Great Famine (Irish: an Gorta Mor), the Great Hunger, or mainly outside of Ireland as the Irish Potato Famine, was a period of mass starvation and disease in Ireland from 1845 to 1849. With the most severely affected areas in the west and south of Ireland, where the Irish language was dominant, the period was contemporaneously known in Irish as An Drochshaol, loosely translated as the "hard times" (or literally, "The Bad Life"). The worst year of the period was 1847, known as "Black '47". During the famine, about one million people died and a million more emigrated, causing Ireland's population to fall by between 20% and 25%. The proximate cause of the famine was a natural event, a potato blight, which infected potato crops throughout Europe during the 1840s, also causing some 100,000 deaths outside Ireland and influencing much of the unrest in the widespread European Revolutions of 1848. From 1846, the impact of the blight was exacerbated by the Whig government's economic policy of laissez-faire capitalism. Longer-term causes include the system of absentee landlordism, and single-crop dependence. The famine was a watershed in the history of Ireland, which from 1801 to 1922 was ruled directly by Westminster as part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The famine and its effects permanently changed the island's demographic, political, and cultural landscape, producing an estimated two million refugees and spurring a century-long population decline. For both the native Irish and those in the resulting diaspora, the famine entered folk memory. The strained relations between many Irish and their government soured further because of the famine, heightening ethnic and sectarian tensions and boosting Irish nationalism and republicanism in Ireland and among Irish emigrants in the United States and elsewhere. The potato blight returned to Europe in 1879, but by that point the Land War, described as one of the largest agrarian movements to take place in 19th-century Europe, had begun in Ireland. The movement, organized by the Land League, continued the political campaign for the Three Fs, issued in 1850 by the Tenant Right League during the Great Famine. When the potato blight returned in the 1879 famine the League boycotted "notorious landlords" and its members physically blocked evictions of farmers; the consequent reduction in homelessness and house demolition resulted in a drastic reduction in the number of deaths. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-celts-dvd-set-tv-series-all-6-shows-celtic-history-3-dis63.html

July 29, 1856: #DOTD: #RIP: Robert Schumann, German composer and influential music critic, widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era (b. June 8, 1810) #dies in Bonn, Rhine Province, Prussia, aged 46, most likely caused by syphilis. He is buried in the Alter Friedhof in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. His medical records from this illness were released in 1991, and suggest a "progressive paralysis", a term used for neurosyphilis at the time, although a diagnostic test for the Treponema pallidum syphilis bacterium did not become available until 1906. These records and his reported symptoms have contributed to a modern view is that he did indeed die from syphilis, which he could have contracted during his student days, and which could have remained latent during most of his marriage. According to studies by the musicologist and literary scholar Eric Sams, Schumann's symptoms during his terminal illness and death appear consistent with those of mercury poisoning; mercury was a common treatment for syphilis and other conditions. Another possibility is that his neurological problems were a result of an intracranial mass. A report by Janisch and Nauhaus on Schumann's autopsy indicates that he had a "gelatinous" tumor at the base of the brain; it may have represented a colloid cyst, a craniopharyngioma, a chordoma, or a chordoid meningioma. In particular, meningiomas are known to produce musical auditory hallucinations such as Schumann reported; Schumann heard a persistent A-note at the end of his life, which may have been a form of tinnitus, or perhaps an auditory hallucination caused by meningioma or to his major depressive episode. At times, he had musical hallucinations that were longer than just the single A, but his diaries include comments about hearing the annoying single note. Schumann suffered from a mental disorder, first manifesting itself in 1833 as a severe melancholic depressive episode, which recurred several times alternating with phases of 'exaltation' and increasingly also delusional ideas of being poisoned or threatened with metallic items. Diagnosed with "psychotic melancholia", Schumann's symptoms increased in late February 1854, with angelic visions sometimes being replaced by demonic ones. He warned his wife Clara that he feared he might do her harm. On February 27, he attempted suicide by throwing himself from a bridge into the Rhine River (his elder sister Emilie had died by suicide in 1825, possibly by drowning herself). Rescued by boatmen and taken home, he asked to be taken to an asylum for the insane. He entered Dr. Franz Richarz's sanatorium in Endenich, a quarter of Bonn, and remained there until he died. During his confinement, he was not allowed to see Clara, although Brahms was free to visit him. Clara finally visited him two days before his death. He appeared to recognize her, but was able to speak only a few words. After Robert's death, Clara continued her career as a concert pianist, which supported the family. From mid-career on, she mainly performed music by leading composers. A hired cook and housekeeper tended to the children while she traveled. In 1856, she first visited England. The critics received Robert's music coolly, with Henry Chorley being particularly harsh. She returned to London in 1865 and made regular appearances there in later years, often performing chamber music with the violinist Joseph Joachim and others. She became the authoritative editor of her husband's works for Breitkopf & Hartel. It was rumoured that she and Brahms destroyed many of Schumann's later works, which they thought were tainted by his madness, but only the Five Pieces for Cello and Piano are known to have been destroyed. Most of Schumann's late works, particularly the Violin Concerto, the Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra and the Violin Sonata No. 3, all from 1853, have entered the repertoire. Robert Schumann was born in Zwickau, in the Kingdom of Saxony (today Central Germany). Schumann left the study of law, intending to pursue a career as a virtuoso pianist. He had been assured by his teacher Friedrich Wieck, a German pianist, that he could become the finest pianist in Europe, but a hand injury ended this dream. Schumann then focused his musical energies on composing. Schumann's published compositions were written exclusively for the piano until 1840; he later composed works for piano and orchestra; many Lieder (songs for voice and piano); four symphonies; one opera; and other orchestral, choral, and chamber works. Works such as Carnaval, Symphonic Studies, Kinderszenen, Kreisleriana, and the Fantasie in C are among his most famous. His writings about music appeared mostly in the Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik (New Journal for Music), a Leipzig-based publication which he jointly founded. In 1840, Schumann married Friedrich Wieck's daughter Clara, against the wishes of her father, following a long and acrimonious legal battle, which found in favor of Clara and Robert. Clara also composed music and had a considerable concert career as a pianist, the earnings from which, before her marriage, formed a substantial part of her father's fortune. https://store.earthstation1.com/music-documentaries-iv-dvd-moods-amp-music-code-amp-cypher.html

July 29, 1981: #DOTD: #RIP: Robert Moses, dominant American urban planner and public official of the New York metropolitan area whose grand-scale infrastructure projects and philosophy of urban development influenced a generation of engineers, architects, and urban planners across America, designer of the Northern State Parkway and Southern State Parkway, organizer of the 1964 New York World's Fair (b. December 18, 1888) #dies of heart disease at the age of 92 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, New York. He was interred in a crypt in an outdoor community mausoleum in Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, New York City following services at St. Peter's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Bay Shore, New York. Robert Moses was born in New Haven, Connecticut to German Jewish parents; Moses was raised in a secularist manner inspired by the Ethical Culture movement of the late 19th century, and later converted to Christianity. Despite never being elected to any office, Moses is regarded as one of the most powerful individuals in the history of the New York City and New York State governments. Moses held various positions throughout his more than forty-year long career, holding up to 12 titles simultaneously, including New York City Parks Commissioner and Chairman of the Long Island State Park Commission. He created and led numerous semi-autonomous public authorities, through which he controlled millions of dollars in revenue and directly issued bonds to fund new ventures with little outside input or oversight (having worked closely with New York Governor Al Smith early in his career, Moses became expert in writing laws and navigating and manipulating the inner workings of state government). Moses's projects transformed the New York area and revolutionized the way cities in the U.S. were designed and built. As Long Island State Park Commissioner, Moses oversaw the construction of Jones Beach State Park, the most visited public beach in the United States, and was the primary architect of the New York State Parkway System. As head of the Triborough Bridge Authority, Moses had near-complete control over bridges and tunnels in New York City as well as the tolls collected from them, and built, among others, the Triborough Bridge, the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, and the Throgs Neck Bridge, as well as several major highways. These roadways and bridges, alongside urban renewal efforts that saw the destruction of huge swaths of tenement housing and their replacement with large public housing projects, transformed the physical fabric of New York and inspired other cities to undertake similar development endeavors. Although he was well-regarded throughout most of his career, Moses's reputation was damaged with the publication of Robert Caro's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography The Power Broker (1974). Casting doubt on the supposed benefits of many of Moses's projects, The Power Broker painted a picture of Moses as a power-hungry and vindictive man who was not above questionable ethics and wielded excessive power. Caro's book further cast Moses as racist, highlighting the damage to black and other minority communities inflicted by many of Moses's urban renewal and highway construction projects. In large part because of The Power Broker, Moses is today considered a controversial figure in the history of New York City. https://store.earthstation1.com/grde7padosem.html

July 29, 1984: #DOTD: #RIP: Fred Waring, nicknamed "America's Singing Master" and "The Man Who Taught America How To Sing", popular American musician, singer, bandleader, radio and television personality, promoter, financial backer and eponym of the Waring Blendor, the first modern electric blender on the market (b. June 9, 1900) #dies of a stroke at his summer home in State College, Pennsylvania. after videotaping a concert with his ensemble and completing his annual summer choral workshop, aged 84; he is buried at Shawnee Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Shawnee On Delaware, Pennsylvania. He conducted many such workshops at Penn State in his later years, and in 1984, designated Penn State to house his collection of archives and memorabilia. He also served his alma mater as a trustee and was named a distinguished alumnus of the university. Fred Waring was born Fredrick Malcolm Waring in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, on June 9, 1900, to Jesse Calderwood and Frank Waring. During his teen years, Waring, his brother Tom, and their friend Poley McClintock founded the Waring-McClintock Snap Orchestra, which evolved into Fred Waring's Banjo Orchestra. The band often played at fraternity parties, proms, and dances, and achieved local success. Waring attended Penn State University, where he studied architectural engineering. He aspired to be in the Penn State Glee Club, but he was rejected with every audition. His Banjo Orchestra became so successful that he decided to abandon his education to tour with the band, which eventually became known as Fred Waring and His Pennsylvanians. From 1923 until late 1932, "Waring's Pennsylvanians" were among Victor Records' best-selling bands. In late 1932, Waring abruptly quit recording, although his band continued to perform on radio. In 1933, "You Gotta Be a Football Hero" was performed on radio to great acclaim. His 1930 recording of "Love for Sale" by Cole Porter is one of the only period versions of this popular song. The Fred Waring Show was heard on radio in various forms from 1933 to 1957. Adding a men's singing group to his ensemble, he recruited Robert Shaw, recently out of the Pomona College glee club, to train his singers. Shaw later founded the Robert Shaw Chorale and directed the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Pembroke Davenport (1911-85) was Waring's pianist and arranger. During World War II, Waring and his ensemble appeared at war bond rallies and entertained the troops at training camps. He composed and performed dozens of patriotic songs, his most famous being "My America". In 1943, he acquired the Buckwood Inn in Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania, and renamed the resort the Shawnee Inn. To promote the inn, he centered his musical activities at the inn itself. He created, rehearsed, and broadcast his radio programs from the stage of Shawnee's Worthington Hall throughout the 1950s. During the 1940s and early 1950s, Waring and His Pennsylvanians produced a string of hits, selling millions of records. A few of his many choral hits include "Sleep", "Battle Hymn of the Republic", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", "Button Up Your Overcoat", "White Christmas", "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor", and "Dancing in the Dark". The song, "Breezin' Along with the Breeze" was used as a signature tune by Fred Waring. In 1947, Waring organized the Fred Waring Choral Workshop at his Pennsylvania headquarters in the old Castle Inn in Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania, which was also the home of Shawnee Press, the music publisher which he founded. At these sessions, musicians learned to sing with precision, sensitivity, and enthusiasm. When these vocalists returned home and shared what they had learned with fellow musicians, Waring's approach to choral singing spread throughout the nation. Waring expanded into television with The Fred Waring Show, which ran on CBS Television from June 20, 1948, to May 30, 1954, and received several awards for Best Musical Program. (The show was 60 minutes long until January 1952, and 30 minutes thereafter.) In the 1960s and 1970s, popular musical tastes turned from choral music, but Waring changed with the times, introducing his Young Pennsylvanians, a group of fresh-faced, long-haired, bell-bottomed performers who sang old favorites and choral arrangements of contemporary songs. In this way he continued as a popular touring attraction, logging some 40,000 miles a year. In the 1930s, inventor Frederick Jacob Osius went to Waring for financial backing for an electric blender he had patented. The Osius patent (#2,109,501) was filed March 13, 1937, and awarded March 1, 1938. Some 25K USD later, the Waring-owned Miracle Mixer was introduced to the public at the National Restaurant Show in Chicago retailing for 29.75 USD. In 1938, Fred Waring renamed his Miracle Mixer Corporation as the Waring Corporation, and the mixer's name was changed to the Waring Blendor (the "o" in blendor giving it a slight distinction from "blender"). The Waring Blendor became an important tool in hospitals for the implementation of specific diets, as well as a vital scientific research device. Jonas Salk used it while developing his polio vaccine. In 1954, the millionth Waring Blendor was sold. In 1983, the 83-year-old Waring was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation's highest honor for a civilian. In Long Beach, California, Fred Waring Drive is named for him. Another Fred Waring Drive is a major arterial road in the Palm Desert-Indio area of Southern California where many major roads are named for post-World War II-era entertainers. The Waring Golf Course north of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was named after Waring, and he had an ownership interest in it. Waring was the Shepherd (president) of The Lambs, America's oldest social club for actors, songwriters, and others involved in the theatre locarted in New York City, from 1939-1942. In 1997, a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars was dedicated to him. Waring was a cartoon and comic strip collector. A Penn State meeting room by the West Wing restaurant has dozens of cartoons drawn by artists such as Al Hirschfeld in Waring's honor. From 1943 to 1974, Waring owned the Shawnee Inn and Country Club, a golf resort located at Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania near Stroudsburg. In 1948, two years after the National Cartoonists Society was formed, Waring invited members of that organization to spend a day at the Shawnee Inn. It became an annual event, held each June for the next 25 years, resulting in a huge collection of artwork created for Waring by the cartoonists, including many drawn on Shawnee Inn stationery. The Fred Waring Collection has more than 600 cartoon originals, including over 50 of the laminated table tops. https://store.earthstation1.com/voice-of-the-army-mp3-cd-complete-world-war-ii-radio-serie3.html

July 29, 2005: #DOTD: #RIP! Pat McCormick, American actor and comedy writer known for playing Big Enos Burdette in Smokey And The Bandit and its two sequels (b. June 30, 1927) #dies aged 78 at the Motion Picture and Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, where he spent the last seven years of his life. He was interred in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills. Pat McCormick was born in Lakewood, Ohio. He wrote for a number of performers such as Red Skelton, Phyllis Diller, Johnny Carson, Jonathan Winters, Jack Paar and Danny Kaye, as well as for television shows including Get Smart and Candid Camera. He was also a member of the I've Got a Secret production staff in the early 1960s. McCormick had a distinctive appearance being 6'7" tall, weighing 250 lbs and having a walrus mustache. McCormick was a 1945 athlete graduate of Rocky River High School and served in the United States Army during World War II. He then enrolled at Harvard University as a freshman in the autumn of 1947 where he played basketball that year. He later dropped basketball to concentrate on track (hurdles). He dropped out of Harvard Law School for a career in advertising, but abandoned that career as well when he started writing jokes for television and standup comedians. McCormick was both the announcer and straight man for Don Rickles on The Don Rickles Show in 1968. He was a regular on The New Bill Cosby Show in 1972. Behind the scenes, he was one of the lead writers on The Tonight Show writing many of its most well-known lines. He wrote the line "Due to today's earthquake, the God is Dead rally has been canceled." As part of a skit on a Jonathan Winters special McCormick, as a court jester, quipped to the regally-attired Winters "Is that a scepter in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" a quite risque line for early 1970s television. His first screen performance was in The Shaggy D.A. in 1976. He played President Grover Cleveland in Robert Altman's Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson in the same year. In 1977, he appeared in Smokey and the Bandit and appeared in the sequels in both 1980 and 1983, alongside Paul Williams as wealthy con men Big and Little Enos Burdette respectively. Pat appeared in the 1982 TV movie Rooster, which also starred Williams. He appeared as the Ghost of Christmas Present in a TV production in the Bill Murray comedy Scrooged in 1988, with his final appearance being in Ted & Venus. Living in Palm Springs, California in 1996, McCormick retired in 1998 after being left partly paralyzed by a stroke. According to fellow writer Mark Evanier, McCormick was driving to the Beverly Hilton Hotel when he suffered a stroke and crashed his car into a concrete wall. The vehicle caught fire, but a woman named Danielle Villegas pulled him out and dragged him to safety before the car exploded. McCormick was admitted to the Motion Picture and Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, where he spent the remainder of his life. #IrwinCorey #ProfessorIrwinCorey #Comedians #Jews #StandUpComedy #WorldsForemostAuthority #Comedy #AmericanComedy #Framis #HungryI #TV #Television #TVShows #TelevisionShows #TVInTheUS #TelevisionInTheUS #Stage #Theatre #Theater #Broadway #GoldenGloves #GoldenGlovesBoxingChampions #Boxers #FeatherweightBoxers #HebrewOrphanAsylumOfNewYork #CCC #Blacklisting #BlackLists #LateNightWithDavidLetterman #DavidLetterman #TheTonightShow #TonightShow #JohnnyCarson #HughHefner #PlayboyTicket #ThomasPynchon #GravitysRainbow #WJAR #TheSteveAllenShow #ThePhilSilversShow #AbouBenAtom #BroadwayMusicals #Flahooley #RollingStones #BernieSanders #TheMervGriffinShow #MervGriffinShowShow #MervGriffin #MP3 #CD #AudioDownload https://store.earthstation1.com/golden-age-of-comedy-narrated-by-george-burns-5-album-set-mp3-53.html

July 29, 2007: #DOTD: #RIP: Tom Snyder, American journalist, radio personality, television personality, news anchor, and talk show host, best known for his late night talk shows Tomorrow, on NBC in the 1970s and 1980s, and The Late Late Show, on CBS in the 1990s, pioneer anchor of the prime time NBC News Update, in the 1970s and early 1980s, which was a one-minute capsule of news updates (b. May 12, 1936) #dies of complications from leukemia in San Francisco, California at the age of 71. His burial details are not publicly disclosed. Snyder was posthumously inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame in 2008. He was born Thomas James Snyder in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Frank and Marie Snyder, who were of German, Cornish, and Irish descent. Snyder gained national fame as the host of Tomorrow with Tom Snyder (more commonly known as The Tomorrow Show), which aired late nights after The Tonight Show on NBC from 1973 to 1982. It was a talk show unlike the usual late-night fare, with Snyder, cigarette in hand, alternating between asking hard-hitting questions and offering personal observations that made the interview seem more like a conversation. Unique one-on-one exchanges were common to the program, notably with John Lennon in 1975, John Lydon of PiL and The Sex Pistols in 1980, Charles Manson in 1981, actor and writer Sterling Hayden, author Harlan Ellison, and author and philosopher Ayn Rand. A one-on-one program with David Brenner as the sole guest revealed that Snyder and Brenner worked together on several documentaries. In 1981, "Weird Al" Yankovic had his first appearance on national TV performing Another One Rides the Bus. https://store.earthstation1.com/television-1988-tv-documentary-series-8-shows-4-dual-laye198884.html

Today, July 29, 2026
July 29, 1991: Scandals: Banking Scandals: Money Laundering: The Bank Of Credit And Commerce International Scandal (The BCCI Scandal): -- After a series of seizures in New York City, Luxembourg and Hong Kong, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau announces that a Manhattan grand jury has indicted BCCI, Chairman Agha Hasan Abedi and CEO Swaleh Naqvi on twelve counts of fraud, money laundering, and larceny. Morgenthau, who had been investigating BCCI for over two years, claimed jurisdiction because millions of dollars laundered by the bank flowed through Manhattan. Also, Morgenthau cited BCCI's secret ownership of First American Bankshares, which operated a subsidiary in New York City. Morgenthau said that all of BCCI's deposits had been fraudulently collected because the bank misled depositors about its ownership structure and financial condition. He described BCCI as "the largest bank fraud in world financial history". The Bank Of Credit And Commerce International (BCCI) was an international bank founded in 1972 by Agha Hasan Abedi, a Pakistani financier. The Bank was registered in Luxembourg with head offices in Karachi and London. A decade after opening, BCCI had over 400 branches in 78 countries and assets in excess of 20B USD, making it the seventh largest private bank in the world. BCCI came under the scrutiny of financial regulators and intelligence agencies in the 1980s, due to concerns that it was poorly regulated. Subsequent investigations revealed that it was involved in massive money laundering and other financial crimes, and had illegally gained the controlling interest in the major American bank First American Bankshares. BCCI became the focus of a massive regulatory battle in 1991, and, on July 5 of that year, customs and bank regulators in seven countries raided and locked down records of its branch offices. Investigators in the United States and the UK determined that BCCI had been "set up deliberately to avoid centralized regulatory review, and operated extensively in bank secrecy jurisdictions. Its affairs were extraordinarily complex. Its officers were sophisticated international bankers whose apparent objective was to keep their affairs secret, to commit fraud on a massive scale, and to avoid detection". The liquidators, Deloitte & Touche, filed a lawsuit against the bank's auditors, Price Waterhouse and Ernst & Young, which was settled for 175M USD in 1998. By 2013, Deloitte & Touche claimed to have recovered about 75% of the creditors' lost money. https://store.earthstation1.com/bank-of-crooks-amp-criminals-the-bcci-scandal-dvd-mp4-download-usb-driv4.html

July 29, 1955: #DOTD (Fictional): Godfather Vito Corleone (b. December 7, 1891 (Fictional)) #dies of a heart attack in his garden while playing with his grandson, Michael's son Anthony. In the novel, his last words are, "Life is so beautiful." He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, a Roman Catholic cemetery located in Woodside, Queens, New York City, a cemetery managed by the Trustees of St. Patrick's Cathedral, one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in the United States. His funeral was attended by many crime family members from across the country. It was at this funeral that Vito's son and new Godfather, Michael Corleone, discovered that it was Caporegime Salvatore "Sal" Tessio, one of Don Vito Corleone's most trusted friends, who was the traitor in the family Don Vito warned Don Michael about, saying that whoever approached Michael about setting up a meeting with Don Emilio Barzini of the Barzini crime family (inspired by the Genovese crime family) was the traitor within the Corleone crime family (a family that has drawn comparisons with the real-life Genovese and Bonanno crime families). Accordingly, as Tessio and Corleone family Consigliere Tom Hagen were preparing to attend the summit, Corleone family hitman and soldato Willie Cicci told Tessio that Michael was coming in a separate car. Tessio was visibly upset, saying that it threw off his "arrangements". Hagen said he couldn't come along either, while Cicci and several of Clemenza's men surrounded Tessio. Realizing that Michael had found out about his treachery, Tessio asked Tom to tell Michael that it was "only business" and he always liked him. Tessio then asked Tom if he could get him off the hook for "the old times' sake". Tom rejected his appeal. Willie Cicci and a few other men then drove Tessio to Two Toms, Tessio's social club, where his traitorous men were executed. Tessio, and his dead co-conspirators were then brought to an abandoned gas station on Staten Island where he was executed by his former protege Nick Geraci, while Corleone hitman, security head and Caporegime Al Neri looked on. His death was attributed to the Barzini family, since Staten Island was their territory, which explained the death of Don Barzini at the same time. Tessio's wife Lucille and his children were provided for by the Corleones after his death. Vito Corleone was born on the same date that 50 years later the Pearl Harbor attack occurs, the same day his son and future Godfather Michael Corleone enlists in the U.S. Marines. Vito Corleone (born Vito Andolini) is a fictional character in Mario Puzo's 1969 novel The Godfather and in the first two of Francis Ford Coppola's film trilogy. Vito is originally portrayed by Marlon Brando in the 1972 film The Godfather and later by Oreste Baldini as a boy and by Robert De Niro as a young man in The Godfather Part II (1974). He is an orphaned Sicilian immigrant who builds a Mafia empire. He and his wife Carmela have four children: Santino ("Sonny"), Frederico ("Fredo"), and Michael, and one daughter Constanzia ("Connie"). Vito informally adopts Sonny's friend, Tom Hagen, who becomes his lawyer and consigliere. Upon Vito's death, Michael succeeds him as Don of the Corleone crime family. Vito oversees a business founded on gambling, bootlegging, prostitution, and union corruption, but he is known as a kind, generous man who lives by a strict moral code of loyalty to friends and, above all, family. He is also known as a traditionalist who demands respect commensurate with his status; even his closest friends refer to him as "Godfather" or "Don Corleone" rather than "Vito". Vito Corleone is based on a composite of mid-20th century New York Mafia figures Carlo Gambino, Frank Costello, Joe Bonanno, and Joe Profaci; he is also partly based on Philadelphia crime boss Angelo Bruno. https://store.earthstation1.com/crime-inc-the-true-story-of-the-mafia-dvd-set-2-disc2.html

July 29, 1876: #BOTD: #HBD! Maria Ouspenskaya, Russian-American actress and acting teacher, best known in popular culture for playing the old Gypsy fortuneteller in the horror films The Wolf Man (1941) and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943) (d. December 3, 1949) is #born Maria Alekseyevna Ouspenskaya in Tula, Russian Empire. She achieved success as a stage actress as a young woman in Russia, and as an elderly woman in Hollywood films. She studied singing in Warsaw, Poland, and acting in Moscow. She was a founding member of the First Studio, a theatre studio of the world-famous Moscow Art Theatre. There she was trained by Konstantin Stanislavsky and his assistant Leopold Sulerzhitsky. The Moscow Art Theatre traveled widely throughout Europe, and when it arrived in New York City in 1922, Ouspenskaya decided to stay there. She performed regularly on Broadway over the next decade. She taught acting at the American Laboratory Theatre and in 1929, together with Richard Boleslawski, her colleague from the Moscow Art Theatre, she founded the School of Dramatic Art in New York City. One of Ouspenskaya's students at the school during this period was Anne Baxter, then an unknown teenager. Although she had appeared in a few Russian silent films many years earlier, Ouspenskaya stayed away from Hollywood until her school's financial problems forced her to look for ways to repair her finances. According to ads from Popular Song magazine in the 1930s, around this time Ouspenskaya also opened the Maria Ouspenskaya School of Dance on Vine Street in Los Angeles. Her pupils included Marge Champion, the model for Disney's Snow White. In spite of her marked Russian accent, she did find work in Hollywood, playing European characters of various national origins. Her first Hollywood role was in Dodsworth (1936), which brought her a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her onscreen appearance in that film was one of the briefest ever to garner a nomination. She received a second Oscar nomination for her role in Love Affair (1939). She portrayed Maleva, an old Gypsy fortuneteller in the horror films The Wolf Man (1941) and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943). Other films in which she appeared were: The Rains Came (1939), Waterloo Bridge (1940), Beyond Tomorrow (1940), Dance, Girl, Dance (1940), The Mortal Storm (1940), Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet (1940), and Kings Row (1942). Maria Ouspenskaya died at the age of 73 several days after suffering a stroke and receiving severe burns in a house fire, which was reportedly caused when she fell asleep while smoking a cigarette. She was buried in Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. https://store.earthstation1.com/lenny-bruce-comedy-album-mp3-megase3.html
